Buffalo, N.Y. – Maddie Fitzgerald scored two goals and had four caused turnovers to lead Canisius University to a 12-7 victory over the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sport Complex.
Le Moyne scored the game's first two goals over the initial six and one-half minutes. Off a free-position shot just 84 seconds into the contest, graduate student attacker
Francesca Tortora (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Stony Brook) tallied her 11th goal of the season. She scored again five minutes later.
Canisius scored the last two goals of the quarter. Maggie Tifft cut her team's deficit in half with 5:17 left off a pass from Meg Hiltz. Lauren Matyka evened the score with 29 seconds remaining with her 12th tally of the year.
The Golden Griffins extended its run to five with the first three goals of the second quarter. Ashlyn Dhandwar put her team in front just 54 seconds into the stanza. Megan Previdi followed at the 10:17 mark with her third goal of the season in an extra-player situation. Leah Pfeiffer then finished off a pass from Previdi 50 seconds later for her ninth tally of the campaign.
Redshirt junior attacker
Olivia Lockwood (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Onondaga C.C.) snapped the streak at the 8:32 mark with her 24th goal of the season after collecting a pass from Tortora.
Canisius followed with two goals in 44 seconds for a 7-3 lead. Dhandwar converted a free-position shot for her ninth marker of the year with 6:38 left and then Fitzgerald found the back of the net off a feed from Previdi.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half with the final two goals of the quarter. Junior midfielder
Maddi Barney (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) scored unassisted with 3:44 remaining and then finished off a pass from Lockwood just 13 seconds later.
The teams split the four goals in the third quarter. Fitzgerald netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 9:41 remaining off a free-position shot. Makenna Crouse pushed Canisius' lead back to two with 1:08 remaining in the period off a dish from Hiltz.
The Golden Griffins scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter. Matyka opened the scoring at the 14:29 mark off a feed from Hiltz. Following 11 minutes of scoreless action, Tifft netted her 10th goal of the game. Ella Forcucci recorded her 28th goal of the season with 1:11 left to end the game's scoring.
Junior goalkeeper
Amanda Manfredi (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) registered a season-high 12 saves in the setback. Isabel Gautreaux earned the win between the pipes by posting four saves against two goals allowed after coming off the bench in the second half.
Le Moyne (5-2), which suffered its first road loss of the season, opens NEC action on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at home against Stonehill College.
