West Haven, Conn. — The Le Moyne College baseball team earned a victory in the second game of a three-game series with New Haven on Saturday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field, 13-1.
Six different players drove in runs for the Dolphins, led by sophomore designated hitter
Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep), who drove in two runs on one hit and walked four times, while also scoring three runs. Junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) also drove in two runs on one hit, walked once and reached on a hit-by-pitch. Senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (
Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon Finger Lakes Community College) recorded two hits, drove in one run and walked twice and junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) drove in two runs, walked three times and stole one base. Sophomore catcher
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) added an RBI on two hits, walked once and was hit-by-pitch twice.
Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher
AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 7.0 innings of work, striking out three batters, allowing one run and earning the victory. Senior right-hander
Luke Connors (
Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) finished a scoreless final 2.0 innings on the mound while striking out one batter.

Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) and junior first baseman
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) each walked to lead off the top of the second inning, and Wegrzyn singled down the left field line to score Sullivan and put the Dolphins ahead 1-0. The next batter was retired but Wegrzyn moved up to second base on a passed ball. Diaz then hit an RBi single to right field to score Romich, and Whelehan followed with a double down the left field line to score Wegrzyn and made it 3-0. The next batter was retired before freshman left fielder
Isaac Brozon (
Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) reached base on an error in the infield that allowed two more runs to score and give the Dolphins a 5-0 lead.
Sullivan walked to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Romich then reached base when a ground ball hit back to the pitcher was overthrown to first base, which allowed Sullivan to score to make it 6-0. Wegrzyn followed with a single to put runners on first and third with no outs. Wegrzyn then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt, and Diaz walked to load the bases. The next batter lined out before Goodness hit an infield single that scored Romich to make it 7-0.
Cannon walked to lead off the top of the sixth. He stole second base and a flyout by Sullivan allowed Cannon to advance to third. Wegrzyn walked and junior third baseman
Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which was followed by an RBI walk by Diaz to make it 8-0.
Brozon reached on an error and Cannon and Sullivan worked walks to load the bases with one out in the top of the seventh inning, and Brozon scored on a ground out by Romich to make it 9-0.
Three singles loaded the bases for the Chargers with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and a ground out by left fielder Jaylin Manson pushed a run across to make it 9-1.
A walk by Diaz and back-to-back singles by Goodness and Brozon loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth inning for the Dolphins, and a fielder's choice by Cannon allowed Diaz to score and gave Le Moyne a 10-1 advantage.
Wegrzyn and Farina were hit by a pitch and Diaz walked to load the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth inning for the Dolphins. Whelehan was then hit by a pitch to score Wegrzyn, and Goodness worked an RBI walk to score Farina and make it 12-1. The next batter was retired before Cannon grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Diaz and increased the Dolphins lead to 13-1.
Connors pitched a 1-2-3 scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to secure the 13-1 victory for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne and New Haven will finish the series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
