Augusta, N.J. — The Le Moyne College baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game set with Wagner on Saturday afternoon at Skylands Stadium, 5-1.
Left fielder Diego Tavarez led the way for the Seahawks, recording three hits, two runs batted in and reaching base on a hit by pitch. Second baseman Matt Sutera and third baseman Dylan Immel each drove in a run on one hit and walked once, and right fielder Lukas Torres singled, walked twice and stole on base.
Right-handed starting pitcher Joseph Steventon earned the victory for Wagner after registering eight strikeouts and allowing one run in 7.0 innings of work. Left-hander Keith Davis completed the final 2.0 innings on the mound, striking out five batters and allowing zero runs to earn the save.
For Le Moyne, junior first baseman
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) drove in the Dolphins' only run of the game on an RBI double and added a single. Senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (
Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) recorded three hits, including a double, and walked once. Freshman right-hander
Luke VanMarter (
Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 4.2 innings of work, striking out one batter, allowing three runs and recording the loss.
Goodness hit a double down the left field line to begin the game, but the Dolphins were unable to drive him in.
Designated hitter Josiah Ross and Torres each walked to begin the bottom of the first inning for the Seahawks and both runners advanced one base on a flyout. Tavarez then singled through the right side to score Ross and Sutera followed with an RBI single through the left side to give Wagner an early 2-0 lead.
Junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led off the top of the fourth inning with a bunt single and later stole second base to move into scoring position. Romich then hit a double to left center to score Cannon and make it 2-1.
Torres singled with one out in the top of bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a stolen base. Tavarez then hit an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1.
Torres and first baseman Joseph Mennella walked to begin the bottom of the seventh and Tavarez reached on a bunt single to load the bases for the Seahawks. The next batter was retired before Immel hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Torres and make it 4-1.
Freshman left fielder
Luke Becker (
Liverpool, N.Y. Christian Brothers Academy) walked and Goodness singled to put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Dolphins were unable to bring them home.
Catcher Brendan McLoughlin walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth and Alex Kerr entered as a pinch runner. Kerr advanced to second on a ground out and stole third base. Omar Carreras pinch hit for Ross and worked a walk to put runners on the corners and a wild pitch allowed Carreras to move to second and Kerr to score to give Wagner a 5-1 lead. Mannella walked and Tavarez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Freshman right-hander
Landon Cook (Minoa, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came in to pitch in relief, making his second career appearance. Carreras attempted to score on a wild pitch, but the Dolphins were able to get the out at the plate and end the inning.
Romich led off the top of the ninth inning with a single to center field. The next two batters were retired before junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) walked to put runners on first and second. Davis struck out the final batter to end the game and secure the 5-1 victory for Wagner.
Le Moyne and Wagner will finish the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
