Cortland, N.Y. — The Le Moyne College baseball team earned a 24-19 win and the series victory in the final game of a three-game set with Delaware State on Monday afternoon at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.
All nine Dolphins in the starting lineup recorded at least two hits in the victory, and eight drove in runs, led by junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) who recorded five hits, including a double, stole two bases and drove in three runs. Cannon had 12 hits and 13 runs batted in total during this series. He is the first Dolphin to record at least four hits in back-to-back games in over 38 years. Sophomore first baseman
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) had two hits, including a grand slam, walked once, and drove in a total of five runs. Junior catcher
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) also drove in five runs total and had three hits, including a double. Freshman left fielder
Isaac Brozon (
Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) recorded three hits, walked once and drove in four runs, while senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (
Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon Finger Lakes Community College) also had three hits, including a double, walked once, stole four bases and drove in a run.
Freshman right-hander
Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) was the third of five relief pitchers for the Dolphins, pitching 2.0 innings of work, allowing four runs, none of which were earned, striking out one and recording the win. Senior right-hander
Luke Connors (
Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) finished the final 1.2 innings on the mound, allowing no runs and earning the save.
The 24 runs scored are the most by the Dolphins since a 24-3 victory over Glenville State on February 25, 2012. With their 21 runs in yesterday's second game, the Dolphins have scored at least 20 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since April 12, 2008, when they posted 20-1 and 29-7 victories over St. Peter's. The 43 total runs is the highest total in the program's history, eclipsing the 37 from May 1, 2007 (vs. Binghamton, 21-16) and April 10, 1976 (at Rochester, 25-12). The Dolphins won a game when allowing at least 19 runs for the first time in the program's history.
Shortstop Santino Harwood and designated hitter Carter Boyd each singled with one out in the bottom of the first inning and second baseman Jabril Bullock hit a two-run double down the left field line to make it 2-0. First baseman Justin Batts then singled to right field to score Bullock and third baseman Jaryn Sample followed with a home run over the left field wall to make it 5-0.
Junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) led off the top of the third inning with a single through the left side. He advanced to second on a ground out by
Paulie Goodness and then reached third base on a wild pitch. Brozon followed with an RBI single to right center to make it 5-1. Brozon later advanced to third base on a failed pickoff attempt and senior shortstop
Adam Sullivan (
Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) hit an RBI single through the right side to score Brozon.
The Hornets had runners on first and third base to begin the bottom of the third inning, and a wild pitch allowed the runner from first to advance to second and the runner from third to score, making it 6-2. Batts walked and Sample hit an RBI double to left field to make it 7-2. Catcher Caleb King then grounded out but it allowed a runner from third to score and gave the Hornets an 8-2 lead.
The Dolphins tacked on eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wegrzyn began the inning with a walk and junior third baseman
Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Junior designated hitter
Chaz Anthony (
Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Wegrzyn to make it 8-3. Farina advanced to third on a groundout by Whelehan and then scored on a wild pitch.
Paulie Goodness walked and reached third on back-to-back stolen bases and Brozon walked to give the Dolphins runners on the corners. Cannon followed with an RBI single to center field to make it 8-5. Sullivan walked to load the base, and Romich was hit by a pitch, which forced in a run to make it 8-6. Wegrzyn then hit a grand slam over the center field wall to make it 10-8 and give the Dolphins their first lead of the game.
Whelehan walked to lead off the top of the fifth and stole second base, which was followed by an RBI double up the middle by Farina to make it 11-8. Brozon then singled to score
Paulie Goodness, and advanced to second on the throw home. The Hornets retired the next two batters before Romich singled to center field to score Brozon and make it a 13-8 game.
The Hornets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth and centerfielder Hassan Turner worked an RBI walk to make it 13-9. Harwood followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 13-10. The next batter was retired before Bullock hit a ground-rule double to right center to score two more runs and make it a one-run game.
Betts walked and Sample singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and the runners advanced to second and third on a ground out by King. Turner then reached on a fielding error, which allowed Betts to score, knotting the game up at 13-13. Harwood doubled to left field to score another run, and Boyd followed with a two-run double to put Delaware State ahead 16-13.
The Dolphins put up eight runs again in the top of the eighth. The first two batters of the inning were retired, but a double by Anthony was followed by an RBI single up the middle by Whelehan to make it 16-14.
Paulie Goodness singled, which allowed Whelehan to advance to third. Goodness stole second to get into scoring position, and Brozon then singled through the right side to score both runners and tie the game at 16-16. Brozon reached second on the throw home, and reached third on a wild pitch before Cannon singled up the middle to score Brozon and regained the lead for Le Moyne, 17-16. Cannon stole second and Sullivan walked, which was followed by a double down the right field line by Romich that scored both runners to make it 19-16. Wegrzyn then singled to left field to score Romich and give the Dolphins their 20th run of the game. Farina reached on a fielder's choice, and Anthony hit a ground-rule double to center field to score Wegrzyn and make it 21-16.
The Hornets loaded the bases to begin the bottom of the eighth, and a wild pitch allowed all the runners to advance a base and made it 21-17. Bullock followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 21-18. A sacrifice fly to center field by Batts later in the inning made it 21-19.
Paulie Goodness led off the top of the ninth with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a flyout to right field by Brozon. Cannon followed with an RBI double down the left field line for his fifth hit of the game and made it 22-19. Sullivan then hit a triple to left center to score Cannon and Romich followed with an RBI single through the left side to give the Dolphins a 24-19 advantage.
Connors pitched a 1-2-3 scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to secure the 24-19 win and series victory for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne will return to action on Friday at University of New Haven at 3:00 p.m.
