MEN’S LACROSSE DROPS ROAD FINALE, 13-10, AT CLEVELAND STATE

Cleveland, Ohio – Landon Whalen registered six points to lead Cleveland State University to a 13-10 victory over the Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team in NEC action at Krenzler Field.

The Dolphins opened the scoring at the 12:51 mark as senior attackman Alec Constable (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) tipped in a pass from senior attackman Owen Wilson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker).

Cleveland State, which clinched a berth in the upcoming NEC Championship, answered with back-to-back goals in less than a minute. Adam Van Voorhis evened the score at one with 10:24 left and then Evan Knickle finished off a feed from Whalen with 9:31 left.

Senior attackman Thomas Berry (Tully, N.Y./Tully) completed the scoring in the opening quarter with 46 seconds left from the right side.

The Vikings regained the lead with two goals in the opening seven minutes of the second quarter. Knickle put his team in front with 11:44 left and then Whalen found the back of the net with 8:12 to go after taking a pass from Creed McDonald.

Le Moyne got a goal back just 46 seconds later as senior long-stick midfielder Connor Chason (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) tallied his first career goal after receiving a pass in transition from sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Brady Pietruszka (Strongsville, Ohio/IMG Academy).

Cleveland State pushed its lead to 6-3 with the next two goals. Griffin Burkey scored with 6:17 remaining after collecting a feed from Ethan Erker. Whalen followed with his second goal of the game 44 seconds later.

Following an offside penalty on the Vikings, senior midfielder Nathan Hoban (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) found the back of the net with 1:07 left after receiving a dish from sophomore midfielder Conner Vaughn () to get the Dolphins within 6-4 at halftime.

Le Moyne cut its deficit back to one 65 seconds into the third quarter as junior midfielder Zach Cartmill (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) finished off a pass from Berry.

The Vikings followed with their fourth two-goal spurt of the game for an 8-5 lead. Whalen scored his team's seventh goal just nine seconds after Cartmill scored in a player-down situation. Erker recorded his first goal of the game with 8:54 left after receiving a pass from Burkey.

Le Moyne scored twice in 45 seconds to get back within one with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter. Berry scored the first of the two with 2:59 remaining and then sophomore midfielder Emmet McDermott (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) tallied his fourth goal of the season at the 2:14 mark off a feed from Cartmill.

Cleveland State scored the first goals of the fourth quarter to extend its lead back to three. McDonald found the back of the net just 32 seconds into the stanza off a pass from Whalen. Erker then scored at the 12:50 mark to force a Le Moyne timeout.

Wilson made it 10-8 with 9:45 remaining after taking a feed from McDermott.

The Vikings had another two-goal spurt to take their first four-goal lead of the game. Mattix Groves made it 11-8 with 4:25 to play. Whalen followed 52 seconds later with his fourth goal of the game.

McDermott scored again with 23 seconds later.

Van Voorhis finished off the scoring for the Vikings with about 30 seconds left.

Berry beat the final whistle with his third goal of the game off a feed from McDermott.

Junior goalkeeper Lucas Winger (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) made 17 saves (against 12 goals) over 56:27 between the pipes in the loss. Justin Dalum recorded 11 saves to earn the win.

Le Moyne (3-11, 2-4 NEC) closes out the season next Saturday against Mercyhurst University at 12:00 p.m. With the loss, the Dolphins were eliminated from contention for an NEC Championship berth, which snaps their streak of 27 consecutive seasons of qualifying for a conference tournament.
