BASEBALL TAKES SERIES FINALE, 10-3, OVER NEC-LEADING FDU

Syracuse, N.Y. —  The Le Moyne baseball team registered the victory in the rubber game of a three-game set with NEC-leading FDU on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field, 10-3.

Six different players recorded RBIs for the Dolphins, led by senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College), who drove in two runs on three hits, walked once and stole two bases. Junior first baseman Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) drove in two runs on an RBI double and added a single and sophomore designated hitter Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) also drove in two and recorded a walk. Sophomore catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) and junior second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) each drove in a run on two hits and freshman third baseman Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) added an RBI single and walked once.

Freshman right-hander Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching a career-high 5.1 innings of work, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, striking out a career-high six batters and earning his second win. Senior right-hander Luke Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) finished the final 3.2 innings on the mound, allowing no runs and striking out three batters to earn his fourth save of the season and the second of the series.

Center fielder Travis Stroh walked and shortstop Johnathan Gomez singled to begin the top of the third inning. Right fielder Hunter Ray then singled to center field to score Stroh and give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Ray tried to steal second later in the frame and was caught in a rundown, which drew a throw home as Gomez broke for the plate. Gomez scored ahead of the tag and Ray moved up to second base, making it a 2-0 game.

Cannon singled and senior shortstop Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) walked to put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the third. Romich followed with a two-run double to the right center gap, tying the game at 2-2. Romich then advanced to third base on a wild pitch before Diaz brought him home on an RBI single in the infield, putting the Dolphins in front 3-2.

Goodness worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the fourth. He then stole second base before Brozon lined an RBI single to center field to make it 4-2.

Romich singled and Diaz walked to put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wegrzyn followed with a single through the left side that scored Romich to make it a 5-2 game. The next batter lined out before freshman left fielder Nick Kriegelstein (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) walked to load the bases and Goodness followed with a two-run single through the right side to make it 7-2. A wild pitch then allowed Kriegelstein to score from third to make it 8-2.

Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Knights with one out in the top of the sixth and catcher Nick Quagliato lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to make it an 8-3 game.

Cannon and Sullivan walked to begin the bottom of the eighth and they moved up to second and third base on an executed double steal. The next batter was retired before Diaz lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cannon, making it 9-3. Wegrzyn was then hit by a pitch before Whelehan singled to right center to score Sullivan and make it a 10-3 game.

Connors tossed a 1-2-3 scoreless top of the ninth inning to secure the 10-3 win and series victory for Le Moyne.
