BASEBALL RALLIES IN GAME ONE AND USES WEGRZYN’S SLAMS IN GAME TWO TO SWEEP NORFOLK STATE, 10-4, 15-4

Norfolk, Va. — The Le Moyne College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field. A seven-run seventh inning propelled the Dolphins to a 10-4 comeback victory in game one, and sophomore catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded a pair of grand slams to lead Le Moyne to a 15-4 victory in game two.

Game One:

Six different players drove in runs for the Dolphins, led by senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College), who drove in two runs on two hits and stole one base. Freshman left fielder Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) and senior shortstop Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) each recorded a pair of RBIs. Wegrzyn added an RBI single and junior right fielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) recorded two hits, including a double, walked twice and stole one base, his 40th of the season, which made him the second player in Division I this season to reach the mark.

Freshman right-hander Luke VanMarter (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching a career-high 6.0 innings of work, allowing four runs, two of which were earned, striking out four batters and earning the win. Redshirt sophomore left-hander Max Danaher (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) finished the final 3.0 innings on the mound, allowing zero runs, striking out one batter and earning his second save of the season.

Norfolk State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning after right fielder Justin Journette reached on a throwing error in the infield, which allowed two runners to score, giving the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.

Second baseman Hunter Gillespie doubled and shortstop Jaydan Israel walked to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. A one-out walk by catcher Ryan Hoeft loaded the bases before designated hitter Josiah Harrison lined a two-run single to left center to give Norfolk State a 4-0 lead.

After being no-hit for the first six innings, the Dolphins exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. Cannon and junior catcher Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Wegrzyn then singled to right field to bring Cannon home before junior left fielder Chaz Anthony (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) lined an RBI single to left field to make it a 4-2 game. Back-to-back walks by junior second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and junior third baseman Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) forced in another run and Goodness followed with a two-run double to right center to give Le Moyne a 5-4 lead. A sacrifice fly by Brozon scored Farina and a wild pitch allowed Goodness to score to make it a 7-4 game.

Goodness lined a one-out double to left center in the top of the ninth and stole third before Brozon lined an RBI single to right center to make it 8-4. Brozon then advanced to third on consecutive stolen bases. Cannon followed with a walk and stole second base before Sullivan hit a two-run single up the middle to give the Dolphins a 10-4 lead.

Danaher pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning to secure the 10-4 victory for Le Moyne.

Game Two:

Wegrzyn led the Dolphins with a career-high and program record-tying nine runs batted in on three hits, including two grand slams, marking his first-collegiate multi-homer game. Wegrzyn, who is the first player in the program's history to hit two grand slams in a game, now has six home runs on the season, four of which are grand slams. Brozon drove in two runs on a career-high four hits, including a double, reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole one base. Romich added a two-run triple and Whelehan recorded an RBI single and walked once.

Freshman right-hander Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 5.0 innings of work, allowing four runs, striking out three batters and recording the win. Redshirt sophomore Eric Swienecicki (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) tossed a scoreless final 2.0 innings on the mound.

Goodness walked, Brozon singled and Romich was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out in the top of the first inning. Wegrzyn followed with a grand slam over the left field wall, his fifth home run of the season, to give Le Moyne a quick 4-0 lead.

Israel singled to lead off the bottom of the first. He stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before Journette lined an RBI single to left center to make it 4-1. Harrison followed with an RBI double to right center to make it a 4-2 game.

Freshman right fielder Nick Kriegelstein (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) reached on a throwing error to begin the top of the second inning. Goodness and Brozon then recorded consecutive hit-by-pitches to load the bases with no outs and Sullivan worked an RBI walk to make it a 5-2 game. Wegrzyn then lifted his second grand slam of the game over the left field wall to give Le Moyne a 9-2 lead.

Brozon singled and walked to give the Dolphins runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the third inning and Romich followed with a two-run triple to center field to make it an 11-2 game. Wegrzyn then doubled to left center to bring Romich home and make it 12-2.

Walks by Anthony, Whelehan and Goodness loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth inning and a single by Brozon through the right side brought two more runs across the plate, making it a 14-2 game.

Anthony lined a two-out double to left center in the top of the fifth. He advanced to third on a wild pitch before Whelehan singled through the left side to make it 15-2.

Singles by Ealey and Harrison put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Spartans. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before first baseman Cameron Mazell sent a two-run single into right field to make it a 15-4 game.

Swienecicki worked around a leadoff single to close out a scoreless final frame and secure the 15-4 win and series victory for the Dolphins.
