BINGHAMTON COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF BASEBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team dropped a game at home to Binghamton University on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field, 24-13.
 
Eleven different players drove in runs for the Bearcats, led by designated hitter Tommy Popoff, who drove in seven runs on two hits, including a grand slam. Left fielder Grant Hunter added a three-run homer and walked once and first baseman Steven Kraus also homered, drove in four runs total and walked twice. Second baseman Sean Sweeney had two RBIs on three hits, including a double, and walked once, and center fielder Matt Bolton drove in two on one hit and walked twice.
 
Right-hander Brady Bouchard made the start for Binghamton, allowing three runs and striking out two batters in 1.0 inning of work. Right-hander Dan McAliney was the second of five relievers for the Bearcats, pitching 2.0 innings of work, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, striking out two batters and earning the victory. Right-hander Ryan Bates tossed a scoreless final inning on the mound.
 
Junior designated hitter Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led the Dolphins with four RBIs on two hits, including a home run, and walked once. Senior shortstop Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) also homered and drove in four runs while adding a walk.  Sophomore catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) drove in two runs on two hits and freshman third baseman Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) added a sacrifice fly, doubled and walked once. Senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) added two singles and reached base on hit by pitches three times.
 
Senior southpaw Colin Skermont (Yorkville, N.Y./Whitesboro/Herkimer College) made the start for Le Moyne, striking out one batter in 1.0 inning of work and recording the loss. Sophomore right-hander Nathan Hiscox (Canton, Conn./Canton) was the third of five relievers for the Dolphins, allowing one run and striking out three batters in a career-high 3.0 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Landon Cook (Minoa, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tossed a scoreless top of the seventh inning.
 
Right fielder Braylen Gonzalez worked a walk to lead off the game. Sweeney singled and Bolton walked to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first and Popoff lined a two-run single up the middle to give the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead. Kraus followed with a three-run shot down the right field line to make it a 5-0 game.
 
Goodness was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the first and Brozon doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. Sullivan later worked a one-out walk to load the bases and Wegrzyn followed with a two-run single through the left side to make it 5-2. Sophomore first baseman Landen Duprey (Morrisonville, N.Y. Peru) then walked to re-load the bases and junior second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, making it a 5-3 game.
 
Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second and an RBI walk by Kraus made it 6-3. Left fielder Zach Kent then drove in a run on an RBI single to left center and a sacrifice fly by catcher Andrew Heppner made it 8-3.
 
Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Dolphins with no outs in the bottom of the second. Cannon worked a walk to force in a run, then a groundout by Sullivan brought home another run to make it an 8-5 game. 
Binghamton pushed 12 runs across the plate in the top of the third inning. The Bearcats loaded the bases to begin the frame and Botlon followed with an RBI walk to make it 9-5. Popoff then sent a grand slam over the center field wall, giving Binghamton a 13-5 lead. Walks by Kraus and Heppner and a hit-by-pitch to Kent re-loaded the bases with no outs. Shortstop Mike Stellrecht then lined an RBI single to right field and third baseman Tim Hennig forced in a run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, making it a 15-5 game. Gonzalez followed with an RBI walk before Sweeney ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make it 18-5. Bolton brought home another on a single through the right side and a sacrifice fly to left field by Popoff gave Binghamton a 20-5 advantage.
 
Freshman right fielder Luke Becker (Liverpool, N.Y. Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman left fielder Nick Kriegelstein (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) singled to put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the third. Goodness then reached on an infield single, and a throwing error allowed Becker to score, making it 20-6. Brozon followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 20-7.
 
Singles by Goodness and Cannon put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth for the Dolphins. Sullivan then sent a three-run shot to right center, his sixth home run of the season, to make it 20-10.
 
The Bearcats loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, and a sacrifice fly by right fielder Jeremy Ramos, who entered the game for Gonzalez, made it 21-10. Hunter then sent a three-run homer out to left field to extend the Bearcats lead to 24-10.
 
Cannon launched a three-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning, his team-leading eighth home run of the season, to make it 24-13.
Three walks loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Dolphins, but Bates retired the final batter of the game to secure the 24-13 victory for Binghamton.
 
Le Moyne will return to action at home on Friday against Stonehill College at 3:00 p.m. The Dolphins and Skyhawks enter the series tied in the win column (14) for the fourth spot in the NEC standings, but the Skyhawks have played three fewer conference games due to having their NEC-opening series with New Haven canceled.
