BASEBALL WALKS OFF STONEHILL, 5-4, ON ROMICH’S SINGLE

Syracuse, N.Y. — A walk-off single by junior first baseman Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) lifted the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-4 victory in game one of a three-game series with Stonehill College on Friday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.

Freshman third baseman Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) led the Dolphins with two runs batted in on two hits, and reached base on a hit-by-pitch before racing home for the winning run. Romich added an RBI on two hits, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) drove in one on three hits and added a stolen base and junior second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) recorded an RBI single and walked once. Junior right fielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added two hits, including a double.

Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 7.0 innings of work, allowing three runs, one of which was earned, and striking out four batters. Senior right-hander Luke Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) pitched the final 2.0 innings on the mound, allowing one run, striking out two batters and earning his third victory of the season.

Romich reached on a fielding error and sophomore catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the second inning. The next batter was retired before a groundout allowed the runners to move up to second and third. Whelehan then lined a hit up the middle that ricocheted off of the pitcher's glove, allowing him to reach and bring home Romich to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. Goodness followed with an RBI single through the right side and an infield single by Brozon brought home Whelehan, making it a 3-0 game.

Three singles loaded the bases for the Skyhawks with one out in the top of the third and a sacrifice fly to left field by first baseman Nathan Kearney made it 3-1.

Brozon lined a two-out RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Shortstop Ryan LeClair reached on an error and third baseman Michael Rickert singled to put runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the fifth. Kearney then grounded out to first base, allowing LeClair to score and making it a 4-2 game. Left fielder Jamison Howland then blooped an RBI single to left field to make it 4-3.

Both sides went quiet until the final inning. A walk by LeClair and a single by Howland put runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the ninth and an RBI single up the middle by designated hitter John Bureau tied the score at 4-4.

Brozon reached on a hit-by-pitch to begin the bottom of the ninth. Cannon advanced Brozon to second on a sacrifice bunt and senior shortstop Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) reached on a hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second. Romich followed by lining a single to left field that brought home Brozon, giving Le Moyne the walkoff victory over Stonehill, 5-4.

Le Moyne and Stonehill will continue the series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
