TORTORA NETS SECOND STRAIGHT OVERTIME WINNER IN 12-11 DOUBLE-OVERTIME VICTORY AT NEW HAVEN

West Haven, Conn. – Graduate student attacker Francesca Tortora (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Stony Brook) scored the game-winning goal with 1:28 remaining in double overtime to give the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team a 12-11 victory over the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in NEC action at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

The Dolphins played a double overtime contest for the first time since a 12-11 loss to Adelphi University in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals on May 12, 2019. That game lasted 23 seconds longer than today's game and was Le Moyne's last game before head coach Liz Beville took over leading the program.

Each team only scored once in the opening quarter. Sophia Devaney started the game's scoring on a free-position shot at the 9:54 mark to give New Haven its only lead of the game. Senior attacker Bella Sampo (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) evened the score at one with 8:22 left on a free-position shot of her own.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter. Redshirt junior attacker Olivia Lockwood (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) put the Dolphins in front for the first time just 1:03 into the period off a feed from Tortora. Helena Dunwoody answered 2:22 later to tie the score again. Following a yellow card on the Chargers, Lockwood scored 17 seconds later at the 8:27 mark. Devaney scored off another free-position shot with 4:03 to go in the half. Junior midfielder Julia Blakeslee (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) gave the lead back to the Dolphins with 2:31 remaining. Dunwoody tallied her second goal of the day with just 39 seconds left. Senior attacker Alexa Strelick (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) completed the scoring in the half with only eight seconds left off a free-position shot for a 5-4 advantage.

Le Moyne scored three times in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Sampo started the spurt at the 13:10 mark after receiving a pass from Tortora, who then found the back of the net herself 42 seconds later. Lockwood capped run at the 10:16 mark for an 8-4 lead.

The Chargers answered with four consecutive goals to even the score at eight. Dunwoody started the streak with 9:25 left off a feed from Summer Castiglione. Dunwoody scored again 92 seconds later after taking a pass from Caitlin Seleny. Sophia Minnion followed 59 seconds later off a dish from Seleny. Castiglione knotted the score at eight during an extra-player situation with 5:07 left in the quarter.

Strelick put the Dolphins back in front by converting a free-position shot during an extra-player opportunity with nine seconds to go in the stanza.

The teams alternated goals over the opening nine minutes of the fourth quarter. Tortora put the Dolphins up by two with 12:45 remaining. Dunwoody cut the margin back to one with 6:55 to go off another pass from Seleny. Lockwood answered back with 6:00 left to make it a two-goal game again.

New Haven tallied the final two goals of regulation to force overtime. Dunwoody scored her team's 10th goal with 4:39 remaining. Following an over two and one-half minute scoreless possession by the Dolphins, the Chargers cleared the ball and called timeout. With just 56 seconds remaining, Seleny tallied the game-tying goal.

Le Moyne won the ensuing draw, but was unable to get a shot off before time expired.

The Chargers had the first chance to win the game in the first overtime period, but Devaney had her point-blank shot during an extra-player situation with 1:17 left saved by junior goalkeeper Amanda Manfredi (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip).

Following a turnover by each team to start the second overtime session and a save by New Haven Ainsley Bourbeau, Tortora scored off a restart for her team-best fourth game-winning goal of the season with 1:28 remaining.

Manfredi finished the game with 11 saves, including three in each of the first and fourth quarters, to earn her 10th victory of the season between the pipes. Blakeslee registered 13 draw controls, which is tied for the fourth-most in a game in the program's history and tied for the second-most in a Division I game. Bourbeau recorded 13 saves, including four in each of the second and third quarters, in the setback.

Le Moyne (10-2, 5-0 NEC), which improved to 16-2 all-time against the Chargers and 8-0 in West Haven, is back home on Wednesday to take on Delaware State University at 2:00 p.m.
