SACRED HEART TOPS VOLLEYBALL ON OPENING DAY OF SHU INVITATIONAL

Fairfield, Conn. – Abbie Hagedorn recorded 17 points to lead Sacred Heart University to a 3-0 victory over the Le Moyne College volleyball team on the first day of the Sacred Heart Invitational on Friday evening at the William H. Pitt Center.

The Pioneers scored the first eight points of the first set en route to a 25-8 win. The teams went back and forth over the opening 16 points of the second set, resulting in a 9-7 Sacred Heart lead. The Pioneers responded with 12 of the next 16 points to take a 21-11 lead. The Dolphins scored the next three points, but Sacred Heart closed out the set with four of the last five points for a 25-15 win. After the teams split the first 14 points of the third set, Sacred Heart rattled off six straight points and 12 of the next 14 for a 19-9 advantage. The teams alternated single points the rest of the set, which ended with another 25-15 win by the Pioneers to close out the match.

Senior opposite Branwyn Lupton (Napanee, Ontario/Napanee Secondary School) recorded the team's first double-digit kill performance of the season with 10, while adding a pair of digs. Junior setter Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) dished out 10 assists, while freshman libero/ds Aubrey Kimball (Greensboro, N.C./Cornerstone Charter Academy) had a team-high six digs.

Hagedorn hit .471 en route to 10 kills and added six service aces, five digs and two assists. Lauren Hubert also had 10 kills on a .571 hitting percentage and posted three digs. Addy Franz directed the offense with 26 assists and landed seven kills to go with three digs. Miliani Villarreal led all players in the match with eight digs, while adding four service aces and four assists.

The Dolphins are back at the Pitt Center on Saturday to take on Binghamton University at 4:00 p.m.
