BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H./Concord) made 15 saves and sophomore Brian Cost (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) scored four goals as No. 1 Le Moyne held off No. 2 C.W. Post 10-9 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at C.W. Post. The Dolphins (10-0) have won 56 straight regular season games, while C.W. Post (5-2) drops its first game against a Division II opponent this season.
Corcoran, who is 38-1 in three seasons at Le Moyne, equaled his career-high save total. He made 11 saves in the first half, one in the third quarter and three in the fourth - including a point-blank stop on Kenny Watson's game-tying attempt with 2:08 remaining.
Cost's four goals mark a new career-high for the sophomore. He scored two of the game's first three goals as Le Moyne hopped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. Cost finished a feed from senior Ryan Lewis (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) for the game's first goal just under five minutes into the contest. After junior Matt Cassalia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) won the ensuing faceoff and scored the game's second goal, Cost made it 3-0 off a feed from Tom Donahue (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee).
The Pioneers scored the final goal of the opening quarter and one to start the second before Mike McDonald (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Cost extended Le Moyne's lead back to three goals. Mike Dimler and Jeremy Jablonski netted extra-man goals to pull C.W. Post back to within a goal at 5-4 late in the second quarter. Le Moyne took a 6-4 lead into the intermission as Lewis pushed across another Le Moyne goal with five seconds left in the second.
Colin Achenbach scored three third-quarter goals as the Pioneers pulled to within a goal in the third. Senior long-stick midfielder Ted Rund (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) delivered Le Moyne another three goal advantage with his first goal of the season, 1:50 into the third quarter. After Achenbach's first goal of the quarter made it 7-5, senior Jason Longo (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) gave Le Moyne a three-goal edge for the final time with 4:33 left in the third. Achenbach, who started his collegiate career in the Northeast-10 Conference at Pace University, scored twice in the final 1:33 of the third quarter to make it an 8-7 game entering the final 15 minutes.
Cost netted his 17th goal of the season to start the scoring in the fourth and give Le Moyne a 9-7 edge. After Ralph Carino put the Pioneers back within one goal, McDonald tallied an unassisted goal with 8:34 left to cap the scoring for Le Moyne.
C.W. Post pulled within a goal on Jablonski's second score of the game with 5:45 remaining, but Corcoran and the nation's top defense kept the hosts off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The Pioneers managed just two shots over the final 5:45, one was blocked by the Le Moyne defense and Corcoran stopped Watson's offering from a few yards out with 2:08 remaining.
The Dolphins have knocked off five teams ranked in the top eight and four in the top five en route to their perfect 10-0 start. Le Moyne will travel to Rindge, N.H. for a contest with Franklin Pierce on Monday evening and to Springfield, Mass. for a meeting with American International on Tuesday. The Dolphins return home to face fellow league-unbeaten Merrimack on April 23.
