Syracuse, N.Y. – Le Moyne College senior leftfielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) has been selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 43rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, as announced to the organization on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals took Edmondson with the 24th pick of the 43rd round and 1309th overall.
Edmondson, the 14th player drafted under the direction of 11th-year head coach Steve Owens following the selection of Mike Anarumo yesterday, is the first Dolphin outfielder drafted since Aaron Bulkley was selected by the Houston Astros in 2005. He is also just the sixth outfielder drafted in the program's 63-year history. Edmondson, a six-foot, 200-pound left-handed batter, is the second player in program history to be selected by the Cardinals (Matt Scherer – 2004). With the selections of Anarumo and Edmondson, the Dolphins have had two players drafted in the same year five times in the last eight MLB Drafts.
An All-American and the Division I Independent Player of the Year in 2008, Edmondson finished his career with 224 hits, 44 home runs, 178 runs batted in, 139 runs scored, 49 doubles and 10 triples over 197 games played. He ranks first on the program's all-time charts in home runs, runs batted in, triples and games played. He also places third in doubles, fifth in hits and sixth in runs scored.
As a senior, Edmondson hit .348 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs, 50 RBI, 41 runs scored and 14 stolen bases as a starter in all 55 games played. Edmondson, who slugged at a .612 clip and posted a .424 on-base percentage, finished the year with 70 hits to become just the third Dolphin to record at least 70 hits in multiple seasons (72, 2008). Edmondson, who had a pair of nine-game hit streaks, registered at least one hit in 42 of the 55 games, including multiple hits in 21 games. He also drove in multiple runs on 11 occasions, including a pair of games with five RBI.
On April 4, Edmondson broke the program's career home run record with a three-run blast over the fence in right field in the third inning of an 8-2 win over Stony Brook. Two days later, Edmondson became the program's RBI leader with a two-run homer at St. Bonaventure.
With his 12 home runs as a senior, Edmondson becomes the first Dolphin to record 12 homers in three separate years, including a program record-tying 14 as a sophomore in 2008. He is also the first Dolphin to drive in at least 45 runs in three years.
