DOLPHINS OPEN SEASON AT NEW ENGLAND CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL HOSTED BY BOSTON COLLEGE

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Senior Katie O'Donnell (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) won three events and classmate Drew Acquaviva (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) was victorious in two events to lead the Le Moyne College swimming and diving teams at the New England Catholic Invitational hosted by Boston College on Friday and Saturday at the William J. Flynn Sports Complex.

O'Donnell picked up her first individual victory of the meet in the 200-yard IM on Friday night. O'Donnell, a seven-time All-American, turned in a time of 2:12.59 in the event to top her competition by 3.42 seconds. In the sixth event on Saturday, the 100-yard backstroke, O'Donnell registered a time of 59.91 seconds to win by 2.81 seconds. O'Donnell recorded her third victory of the meet in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.03.

O'Donnell was also part of a fifth-place relay team. The quartet of O'Donnell, senior Mary Chidsey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), junior Jacqueline Daly (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) and senior Maureen McDonough (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph Hill Academy) touched the wall in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.90. Individually, Chidsey placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:18.22. Senior Meghan Shea (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/Univ. of Bridgeport) finished in the top-four in each of the diving events. After placing fourth in the one-meter event with 208.80 points, she finished third in the three-meter event with 193.15 points.

On the men's side, Acquaviva swept the two backstroke events. He earned his first victory by touching the wall in 53.11 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke to win by .45 seconds. In the 200-yard backstroke, he turned in a time of 2:02.18 to beat the field by 3.02 seconds. Acquaviva was also part of two relay teams that finished in third place. He anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Scott Thieke (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt), sophomore Tyler Olson (Warners, N.Y./West Genesee) and junior Tim Gallivan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) that finished in a time of 1:32.61. He led off the 200-yard medley relay team of junior James Walker (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), Gallivan and Olson that recorded a time of 1:41.61.

Thieke earned a pair of individual top-five finishes at the invitational. He touched the wall fifth in the 400-yard IM in 4:43.47 and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.54. Senior Andrew Dearing (Kenmore, N.Y./Canisius) added a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.37. The Dolphins had two swimmers place in the top-five of the 100-yard butterfly. Gallivan was second in 56.74 seconds, while senior Joe Taylor (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) placed fifth in 58.17 seconds.

Le Moyne returns to the pool on Saturday at home against Northeast-10 Conference foe Bentley at 2:00 p.m.
