Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward Tim Beinert scored seven points, including the game-winning basket with 6.3 seconds remaining, in overtime to lead Assumption to a 79-77 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) led the Dolphins with a career-high 24 points, 15 of which came after halftime, while adding a team-best nine rebounds. Classmate Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) tallied 14 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and senior guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) recorded 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Janson had eight rebounds and three blocks and Cormier handed out four assists and had three steals.
Junior forward Ronson Quick came off the bench to lead the Greyhounds with 23 points in 29 minutes of action, including 17 points after the intermission. Beinert just missed out on a triple-double in the game with 17 points, 10 rebounds (six offensive) and a game-high nine assists. Kevin Donahue was the third Assumption player in double figures with 16 points, including 14 in the second half.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening 10 minutes, leading to the third tie of the contest at 15 apiece. Zapisek canned a pair of three-pointers in the span for the Dolphins as one of five players to score, while Assumption got baskets from six players, including two jumpers by Jimmy Zenevitch and a three-pointer by Cory Schmidt.
Following Schmidt's three-pointer that tied the score at the 9:54 mark, the Dolphins rattled off 18 of the next 23 points to take a 33-20 lead with 1:38 remaining in the half. Cormier ignited the run with seven straight points on a three-pointer, two free throws and a jumper. Janson added four points, Zapisek drilled a three-pointer and Champion and junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) made shots in the paint.
Quick and Beinert converted lay-ups to close out the scoring in the first half to pull the Greyhounds within 33-24.
The Dolphins scored 12 of the first 17 points of the second half to push their lead to a game-high 16 points with 17:06 remaining. Five players scored in the stretch for the Dolphins, including three-pointers by Zapisek and Cormier.
After Cormier's three-pointer at the 17:06 mark, Assumption scored 18 of the next 22 points to close within two points with just over 11 minutes left in regulation. Donahue sparked the comeback with three three-pointers in a span of four possessions. Quick followed with a conventional three-point play before Mike Auriemma, whose father, Geno, is the head coach of the UConn women's basketball team, nailed a pair of three-pointers.
The Dolphins got a three-pointer from senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), a jumper from junior guard Gamal Mohamed">Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) and a dunk from Janson over the six minutes to retain the lead.
The Greyhounds were able to complete the comeback as Ryan Rozsnaki made a fast-break lay-up with 4:37 left to knot the score at 56 apiece and cap a 27-11 run.
Zapisek scored eight straight points on a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up around a Donahue three-pointer to give the Dolphins a five-point advantage with three minutes left.
Over the next two and one-half minutes, Donahue made a jumper and Quick converted a pair of shots in the paint around a free throw from Janson to tie the score at 65 with 34 seconds left.
On Le Moyne's final possession of regulation, Zapisek was fouled on a shot in the paint with two-tenths of a second remaining. Zapisek was unable to hit either of his two free throw attempts, forcing the overtime period.
Champion gave the Dolphins the lead on their opening possession of overtime with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Auriemma countered with a jumper and Quick followed with two free throws to give the Greyhounds their first lead since 12-11 at the 13:37 mark of the opening half. The Dolphins regained the lead on a conventional three-point play by Tartt, Quick hit a free throw and Beinert had a tip-in for a 72-71 Assumption advantage with 2:25 left. After Zapisek and Beinert traded two free throws each and Champion and Quick traded lay-ups, Zapisek gave the Dolphins their final lead of the game with a reverse lay-up with 36 seconds remaining.
On Assumption's next possession, Quick ended up with the ball on the baseline on the right side of the court off a scramble for the ball and fed Beinert underneath the basket. Beinert converted a lay-up and connected on the ensuing free throw for a two-point Assumption lead with 6.3 seconds left. The Dolphins were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Le Moyne (2-2, 1-2 NE-10), which split the season series with the Greyhounds each of the last two years, with the home team winning each game, returns to the court on Wednesday against American International at 7:30 p.m.
