Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 77-55 win over Post University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Johnson went 7-for-10 from the field in the contest, including 6-of-9 from three-point range as he scored 11 points in each half. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) tallied 17 points and pulled down four rebounds, while sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) posted 13 points, a game-best eight rebounds and four assists.
Jake Wilcox was the only Eagle in double-figures with 11 points, while Zach Krischer and James Lee each had eight points.
After the teams traded baskets over the opening 3:40 of the contest, which led to an 8-7 Le Moyne advantage, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to start to pull away. Janson started the run with a lay-up, Johnson drilled a three-pointer in transition and junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) capped the streak with a lay-up after he stole the ball with 13:52 left in the half.
The teams split the game's next 18 points over the ensuing 4:17, resulting in a 24-16 Le Moyne lead with 9:35 remaining. Zapisek and senior guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) each had three-pointers in the stretch for the Dolphins, while Josh Lopez scored four points for Post.
The Dolphins rattled off seven straight points en route to outscoring the Eagles 20-8 over the final 7:09 of the stanza. In the 7-0 spurt, Cormier knocked down a jumper and Johnson followed with a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up. Janson tallied six points in the final 3:37, while Zapisek had five points in the span as the Dolphins took a 44-24 lead at the intermission.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening 5:27 of the second half, with the Eagles pulling within 17 on a Krischer three-pointer. Johnson countered with back-to-back three-pointers off passes from Tartt to push the lead back above 20 points with 13:47 remaining in the contest.
The Dolphins maintained their 20-point advantage over the ensuing six minutes, including a 22-point lead with 9:04 left. The Eagles then scored nine of the game's next 10 points to whittle their deficit to 14 at the 5:20 mark on a Jose Araujo jumper.
Le Moyne regained control of the game with six straight points in a span of 36 seconds. Freshman forward Ryan Romich">Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) and Johnson each made a pair of free throws and Janson capped the stretch with a lay-up.
The Dolphins closed out the game's scoring with the final five points on a Johnson three-pointer and a Tartt lay-up after the Eagles got with 17 on two foul shots by Mike Stepovich.
Le Moyne (4-5), which fell to the Eagles on the road last year, 69-57, return to the court on Monday at C.W. Post at 7:00 p.m.
