DOLPHINS RUN PAST C.W. POST, 97-81, ON THE ROAD IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

Brookville, N.Y. – Sophomores Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and freshman Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) combined for 74 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 97-81 win at C.W. Post on Monday night in non-conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center.

Zapisek scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Dolphins, including 17 in the second half, while adding a team-best nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Champion registered 20 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and dished out 14 assists, one off the school record of 15 set by Rob Thorpe '04 on November 22, 2002 in a 98-86 win over Alderson-Broaddus. Romich came off the bench to score 24 points (17 in the second half) on 11-of-13 shooting in 25 minutes of action, while recording six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) was the fourth Dolphin to reach double-digits with 10 points in the first half.

Stefan Bonneau led the Pioneers with 23 points, including 14 after halftime, and handed out 10 assists. Tobin Carberry tallied 17 points and Vaughn Allen came off the bench to record 12 points. Charles McCann led all players with 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.

The Pioneers opened the game with the first four points and 12 of the first 16 points. Bonneau buried a pair of three-pointers and McCann scored twice in the paint.

After the teams split the next 28 points over a span of seven minutes and 51 seconds to give the Pioneers a 26-18 advantage with 7:53 remaining in the half, the Dolphins scored 14 of the next 15 points to take a five-point lead. Mohamed nailed a pair of three-pointers and made a jumper, Zapisek had a three-pointer to tie the score and Romich had a fast-break dunk to give Le Moyne a 29-27 lead with 5:10 left.

Following a fast-break three-pointer by Vince Rosario to pull C.W. Post within 38-34 with 2:17 to go in the stanza, the Dolphins scored nine of the final 11 points to take a 47-36 lead at the intermission. Zapisek started the spurt with a three-pointer off a feed from Champion, Champion followed with a lay-up, Romich finished off a pass from Champion with a lay-up and Champion closed out the half with a pull-up jumper in the paint before the buzzer sounded.

After the Pioneers opened the second half with five straight points on a jumper by Bonneau and a conventional three-point play by Terry Coleman, Champion fed Zapisek for a three-pointer and Romich for a lay-up off before converting a lay-up of his own to push Le Moyne's lead to 12 with 16:13 left in the contest.

Le Moyne, which shot better than 59% from the field for the second straight game, had its lead bounce between eight and 13 points over the ensuing eight minutes and 52 seconds, resulting in a 74-63 advantage with 7:21 to go. Romich tallied 11 of Le Moyne's 18 points in the stretch, while Bonneau scored eight of C.W. Post's 19 points.

Carberry nailed a three-pointer and a jumper and Rosario buried a three-pointer after a Zapisek three-pointer to get the Pioneers within six points with 6:01 remaining, but they could not get any closer as the Dolphins rattled off 12 straight points in a stretch of three minutes and nine seconds to put the game away. Zapisek ignited the run with a three-pointer and added two lay-ups, Romich made a lay-up, senior guard Chris Johnson">Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) made a free throw and Champion capped the streak with a lay-up.

Champion made four-of-six free throws in the final 2:39 and a lay-up to beat the shot clock with 26 seconds left and Zapisek made two foul shots to close out the victory.

Le Moyne (5-5), which scored its most points since a 107-37 victory over Green Mountain on December 29, 2005 and its most against a Division II institution since the aforementioned victory over Alderson-Broaddus, returns to the hardwood on December 30 against Mansfield at 7:30 p.m. The Dolphins have defeated the Mounties the last two years by a combined five points.
