Box Score West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore guard Justin Exum scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as New Haven rallied for a 65-57 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Charger Gymnasium.
Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) led the Dolphins in the game with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) recorded 10 points as the only other Dolphin in double-figures, while adding five assists.
Exum, who scored 35 points and hit 11 three-pointers in Le Moyne's 74-70 win over the Chargers last year in Syracuse, hit a pair of three-pointers and made six free throws in all 20 minutes in the second half. Freshman forward Eric Anderson and sophomore guard Jeffery Adkins, Jr. each scored 10 points for the Chargers, while Anderson had seven rebounds and three blocks.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first six points on baskets by Janson and classmate Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and a pair of free throws by Janson. After the Chargers countered with nine of the next 13 points to pull within 10-9, the Dolphins got a conventional three-point play from Tartt and a three-pointer by junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) with 11:14 before halftime.
New Haven answered with seven straight points to knot the score at 16-apiece with 6:48 remaining in the half. Adkins, Jr. started the run with a jumper, Exum followed with a jump shot and junior guard Jeremy Williams capped the stretch with a three-pointer.
Le Moyne regained its seven-point lead with nine of the next 11 points. Janson had consecutive lay-ups to start the streak, while Tartt followed an Anderson jumper with a three-pointer and Zapisek closed the span with a lay-up.
Exum made a jumper and Krystian Foriest knocked down a three-pointer, but sophomore guard Nate Champion">Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) buried a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a five-point edge at the intermission.
The Dolphins extended their lead to eight points at the 14:28 mark after scoring nine of the first 15 points of the second half. Zapisek had four of Le Moyne's points in the span, while Exum had four points for the Chargers.
After Tartt had a steal and fast-break lay-up to make the score 37-29, the Chargers rattled off 23 of the next 29 points to turn their eight point deficit into a nine point advantage with 4:03 remaining. Exum started the charge with a three-pointer and gave his team the lead (42-40) with another three-pointer, while Foriest added five points and sophomore guard Ashanti DePass converted four free throws in the span.
Le Moyne cut its deficit to five on a pair of occasions, but could not get any closer as the Chargers went 5-for-8 from the foul line in the final 30.6 seconds of the contest.
Le Moyne (3-3, 2-3 NE-10), which has dropped back-to-back games to the Chargers, returns to the hardwood on Tuesday against Southern Connecticut State at 7:30 p.m.
