DOLPHINS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT GAME WITH 65-57 VICTORY OVER MANSFIELD

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) scored 16 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 65-57 win over Mansfield University in non-conference action on Friday night at Ted Grant Court.

Champion registered nine of his game-high point total in the second half, while adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Kevonte McClain led three Mountaineers in double figures with 16 points. Chuck Harper came off the bench to score 11 points, while Charles Becoats tallied 10 points. Joe Bell led all players in the game with 13 rebounds.

The Dolphins scored the first seven points of the game as they led the entire first half. Senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) started the scoring with a three-pointer, Champion followed with a foul-line jumper and junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) capped the spurt with a lay-up.

After the Mounties scored five straight to get within 7-5 at the 17:23 mark, the Dolphins ran off 13 of the next 15 points for a 20-7 advantage with 13:02 remaining in the half. Champion had five of the points in the stretch, while Zapisek and Janson had four points apiece.

Following back-and-forth play over the next six minutes led to a 25-12 Le Moyne lead, the Mounties scored six straight points in a span of one minute and five seconds to close within seven points. McClain had the first four points, while Bell had a tip-in.

Mansfield got within 34-29 at the intermission with 11 of the half's final 18 points over the last five minutes of the stanza. Bell started the push with a conventional three-point play, while Becoats had the last five with a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up.

The Mounties opened the second half with 15 of the first 18 points to turn their five-point deficit into a seven-point advantage with 14:29 remaining in the game. McClain led the charge with eight points, Kyle Bradley added a pair of lay-ups and Becoats nailed a three-pointer.

After Bell made a fast-break lay-up with 13:19 remaining to give his team a 46-39 lead, the Dolphins scored 12 consecutive points in a span of 4:19 to take a five point lead. Champion scored the first three from the foul line, junior guard Derrek Tartt">Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) made a pair of foul shots and a jumper, Janson converted two free throws and a lay-up and Champion capped the streak with a free throw.

Following a lay-up by Harper to snap a scoreless stretch of 6:11 for the Mounties and two free throws from Josh Dupuy, the Dolphins extended their lead to double-digits with eight of the next nine points. Johnson drilled a three-pointer, Champion made a lay-up and Johnson followed with his third three-pointer of the game.

The teams traded points over the last 3:43 to close out the scoring in the game. Bradley had a conventional three-point play to trim Le Moyne's lead to seven before Zapisek and Janson recorded dunks. Harper then had a free throw and jumper in the paint for the game's final points.

Le Moyne (6-5), which improved to 16-9 all-time against the Mounties and won for the third straight year, returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday at Southern New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m.
