Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) made a floating 10-foot jump shot with 39.1 seconds left to give the Le Moyne College men's basketball team a 66-64 win over Bentley on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Tartt's basket gave him eight points in the game, five of which came in the second half. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) recorded his third double-double of the season with a career-best 26 points, including 16 in the first half, and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) also registered his third double-double of the campaign with 14 points (12 after halftime) and 10 assists, while freshman forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) picked up his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Andrew Shaw led the Falcons offensively with 20 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Jasper Grassa tallied 14 points, while Sam Leclerc scored 10 points.
After Kevin Kettl made a lay-up for the game's first points, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 12 for a six point lead. Janson started the run with a lay-up and followed with a dunk and a free throw, senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) nailed his 289th career three-pointer, which ties him with Joe Girard for second on the program's career made three-pointers list, and Romich followed with a lay-up.
The Falcons, who had won the previous five meetings in Syracuse, cut their deficit to three on a Grassa fast-break lay-up with 10:54 remaining, but Janson recorded consecutive lay-ups to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game (21-14) with 9:49 left in the half.
Bentley (13-5, 9-5 NE-10) scored the game's next seven points to even the score with 5:48 remaining. Leclerc nailed a three-pointer, Shaw made a jumper and J.P. Koury scored in the paint.
Tartt answered with a three-pointer and Champion converted two free throws to put the Dolphins back up by five, but Shaw and Grassa connected on back-to-back three-pointers to give the Falcons the lead.
Janson scored off a feed from Champion with 2:25 left to regain the lead, but Koury had a put-back lay-up with 53 seconds left and Shaw drilled three-pointer with four seconds left to five the Falcons a 32-28 advantage at the intermission.
After sophomore forward Brian Zapisek">Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) nailed a three-pointer to start the scoring in the second half, the Falcons scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a game-best 10-point lead. Grassa drilled a three-pointer, Greg Jacques made two free throws, Grassa connected on another three-pointer and Shaw capped the spurt with a basket from behind the three-point line for a 43-33 advantage with 17:18 left in the game.
Following a three-pointer by Jate Cheshul that gave the Falcons a 46-36 lead with 15:34 to go, the Dolphins scored 10 straight points to knot the score at 46 at the 11:28 mark. Janson made a lay-up and had a dunk, Champion converted a jumper, Romich finished off a feed from Champion and Champion tied the score with a jumper just below the foul line.
Leclerc nailed a three-pointer on Bentley's next possession and Dan O'Keefe had a tip-in to give the Falcons a five-point edge, but Janson had a lay-up, Champion made a jumper and Romich had a put-back lay-up to give the Dolphins the lead.
After Tartt made a lay-up with 5:46 left to give the Dolphins a 58-54 lead, Shaw nailed a three-pointer and Grassa registered a conventional three-point play for a 60-58 advantage. Zapisek answered on the other end with a jumper off a feed from Tartt to tie the score for the fourth time with 3:42 remaining.
Following one minute and 55 seconds of scoreless action, Leclerc nailed a three-pointer and converted the ensuing free throw after being fouled to put the Falcons up four with 1:47 left.
Out of a timeout, Champion made a left-handed lay-up with 1:34 left after a drive from the right wing to pull the Dolphins within two. On Bentley's next possession, Champion picked off a pass and as he raced towards the basket, the Falcons were whistled for an intentional foul. He made the two free throws with 1:11 left to tie the score.
After a Le Moyne timeout, Tartt drove into the paint from the right wing and floated a jumper into the basket for the go-ahead points. The Falcons had a pair of three-point attempts in the final 22 seconds, including one with 1.5 seconds left, but could not convert.
Le Moyne (10-8, 6-8 NE-10), which defeated the Falcons in Syracuse for the first time since January 14, 2003, travels to Saint Michael's on Saturday for a 3:30 tip-off.
