MEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS HOLY FAMILY, 79-49, IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 79-49 win over Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Zapisek added eight rebounds (four offensive), a career best-tying six assists and three steals to his game-high point total. Sophomore Naté Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) registered 13 points and four assists off the bench, while freshman guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) tallied a season-best 12 points off the bench in his first action in 25 days.

Angel Ayala led the Tigers with 11 points and five rebounds in a reserve role, while Tuhran Griffin scored 10 points.

After senior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer, the Tigers scored the game's next nine points. Richard Council, Isaiah Gans and Hunter Wysocki each had lay-ups in the run, while Griffin nailed a fast-break three-pointer.

The Dolphins, who registered their largest margin of victory since a 79-49 win at St. Thomas Aquinas on December 21, 2009, responded with nine straight points of their own on the front end of a 30-4 run spanning nine minutes and 10 seconds. Senior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) kick-started the streak with a jumper, Gause followed with a jumper, junior center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) made two free throws to tie the score at nine with 11:48 remaining and followed with another free throw with 10:35 left to give the Dolphins the lead for good.

After Eric Fleming made a fast-break jumper for the Tigers to end Le Moyne's 9-0 spurt and Holy Family's scoring drought of 4:44, the Dolphins rattled off 14 straight points in 1:58. Mohamed, junior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport), Gause and Lovell each had three-pointers in the stretch, while Lovell added a fast-break lay-up.

The Dolphins, who held an opponent under 50 points for the first time since the aforementioned St. Thomas Aquinas game (a span of 77 games), stretched their lead to 33-13 as Zapisek made a jumper and a three-pointer off feed from Gause, while Mohamed knocked down a jump shot.

The Tigers countered with a 14-7 run over a span of 3:10 to trim their deficit to 40-27. Alberto Munoz recorded seven of the points, while Ayala had four and Griffin nailed a three-pointer. Zapisek made a jumper with eight seconds left in the half to give the Dolphins a 42-27 lead at the intermission.

Holy Family opened the second half with the first six points to get within single digits. Council started the scoring with a jumper and Ayala followed with a pair of lay-ups.

The Dolphins countered with eight of the next 10 points to push their lead back to 15 (50-35) with 15:01 remaining. Zapisek had a conventional three-point play, Janson followed with a tip-in and sophomore forward Ryan Romich">Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) capped the run with a conventional three-point play.

After a 6-3 spurt by the Tigers, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to take a 60-41 lead with 7:50 remaining. Mohamed converted a jumper, Zapisek then drained a three-pointer and Lovell followed with a pair of free throws.

Ervin Ezell nailed a three-pointer and Griffin made two free throws to get Holy Family within 14 with 6:07 remaining, but the Dolphins put the game away with nine straight points and 19 of the final 22 points. Eight different Dolphins accounted for the 19 points, with Lovell recording five of them.

Le Moyne (4-3), which has won all three of its Saturday games this season, returns to action on Monday at 17th-ranked Assumption College at 7:30 p.m.
