Syracuse, N.Y. – Justin Exum scored 19 points to lead New Haven to a 69-56 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
Exum, who scored 35 points in last year's meeting in Syracuse, tallied 12 of his points in the second half, including six from the foul line in the last 3:27. Jeremy Williams registered 13 of his 16 points in the second half, while Cyrus James posted 12 points. Eric Anderson led all players with 10 rebounds.
Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) led the Dolphins offensively with 15 points. Junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) was the only other Dolphin in double figures with 11 points.
The Dolphins scored the first seven points of the game, but New Haven responded with 10 straight over a span of 4:03. Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) made a fast-break lay-up, Janson followed with a jumper and sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) capped Le Moyne's spurt with a three-pointer. In New Haven's streak, Williams nailed a three-pointer, Anderson made a jumper, Exum connected on a three-pointer and Ade Barek dunked the ball.
After the Dolphins got within a point on a jumper by junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) with 9:23 left, the Chargers scored seven of the next nine points for a 20-14 lead with 6:37 to go. Barek made a jumper, Ashanti DePass hit a jump shot and Anderson capped the stretch with a three-pointer.
Following a conventional three-point play by James with 1:09 remaining in the half that gave the Chargers a 26-19 edge, the Dolphins scored the final four points of the half to go into the intermission trailing 26-23. Zapisek converted a pair of free throws before Janson made a lay-up.
Williams opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer, but the Dolphins answered with six straight points to tie the score for the only time in the game. Janson started the push with a lay-up off a feed from Champion before Champion had a fast-break lay-up and another lay-up to even the score at the 17:12 mark.
New Haven countered with six straight points of its own to regain the lead, which it would not give up. Jeffery Adkins, Jr. made consecutive lay-ups before feeding James for a lay-up with 14:59 left.
The Dolphins were able to trim their deficit to two on a pair of occasions, the last of which came at 38-36 on a Zapisek lay-up, but New Haven scored five straight points to hold off the Dolphins. James made two free throws and Exum followed with a pair of three-pointers around a three-pointer by Mohamed.
Following a free throw by Janson to make the score 46-40 with 8:08 left, the Chargers scored 17 of the next 24 points to take a game-best 16-point lead with 2:51 remaining. Williams led the run by hitting three shot clock-beating three-pointers, while Adkins, Jr. tallied four points.
The Dolphins scored seven of the game's next eight points over a span of 1:40 to get within 10, but could not get any closer. Tartt had five of the points, while freshman forward Ryan Romich">Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) had the last two with a lay-up.
Exum hit four free throws and Anderson had one in the final 1:02, while Romich converted two foul shots to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (11-12, 7-12 NE-10), which has lost three straight games to the Chargers after winning the first five meetings as NE-10 opponents, finishes off the road part of its schedule on Tuesday at Southern Connecticut State at 7:30 p.m.
