Box Score New Haven, Conn. – Greg Langston scored 24 points to lead Southern Connecticut State to a 76-69 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at Moore Fieldhouse.
Langston scored 15 of his team-high point total in the second half, while adding seven rebounds. Trevon Hamlet posted 18 points and eight rebounds, while Tylon Smith registered a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Dominique Langston came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds.
Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) scored a career-high 27 points, including 19 in the second half, in his first career game coming off the bench. Senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored 15 points to move into 19th place on the program's all-time scoring chart with 1,219 points.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points and 10 of the first 14. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a dunk, Johnson followed with a three-pointer and then sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made a jumper and a three-pointer at the 15:43 mark.
Following a Johnson jumper with 11:28 left in the half to make the score 12-8 in favor of the Dolphins, the Owls scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 20-14 lead with 7:12 remaining in the stanza. Greg Langston hit a three-pointer to ignite the run, Hamlet followed with a lay-up, Greg Langston knocked down a jump shot, Dominique Langston converted a lay-up and then Hamlet drilled a three-pointer from the left corner.
After junior guard Gamal Mohamed">Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) pulled the Dolphins within four with a jumper, Southern Connecticut scored nine of the next 11 points for its largest lead of the game. Dominique Langston started the streak with a three-pointer and a foul shot, Hamlet scored in the paint and then Smith drilled a three-pointer.
The Dolphins answered with eight straight points and 13 of the next 15 to even the game at 31 apiece with 2:02 left in the half. Johnson drilled his second three-pointer of the half, Champion made a pair of free throws, Mohamed buried a three-pointer, Champion converted a jump shot and then Mohamed nailed a three-pointer in transition.
Southern Connecticut went into the intermission with a 35-34 lead after scoring four of the final seven points of the half. Hamlet had a fast-break put-back with 45 seconds left and Smith made a pair of free throws with five seconds to go, while Johnson made a free throw with 29 seconds remaining and Champion went coast-to-coast after Smith free throws to make a lay-up just before the halftime buzzer.
After the Owls scored the first five points of the second half to extend their lead to six, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 13 points to take the lead at the 14:03 mark. Champion started the rally with a conventional three-point play and another lay-up, Johnson connected on his 295th career three-pointer and Zapisek gave his team the edge by making two free throws.
The Owls took the lead for good by scoring five straight points. Kieran Ramsey had the first three on a free throw and a fast-break lay-up, while Greg Langston followed with a fast-break lay-up of his own for a 48-44 advantage.
After Champion hit a three-pointer to pull the Dolphins within 52-50 with 10:28 left, the two Langstons combined for six points in 1:49 to push SCSU's lead to eight. Greg had a pair of baskets around a fast-break lay-up by Dominique.
Following a conventional three-point play by Hamlet that gave the Owls a nine-point lead (63-54) with 5:50 left, the Dolphins rattled off eight of the next 10 points to get within three with 4:27 to go. Zapisek nailed a three-pointer, Janson recorded a conventional three-point play and then Champion converted a pair of foul shots.
The Owls responded with a pair of three-point possessions around two Champion free throws to push their lead back to seven. Greg Langston had a conventional three-point play after grabbing an offensive rebound and then 1:01 Smith hit a three-pointer from the right wing.
Champion answered with a three-pointer to cut SCSU's lead to four and the Dolphins got the ball back with the opportunity to get closer with 2:23 left, but Smith stole the ball and Hamlet dunked the ball on a fast-break for a six-point edge with 2:15 left.
The Dolphins forced a turnover and Champion converted a lay-up to make the score 73-69 with 1:20 left, but Le Moyne would not score again as Smith hit two free throws and Greg Langston made one to end the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (11-13, 7-13 NE-10), which was eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since the 2000-01 season, returns home to take on Adelphi on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
