Syracuse, N.Y. – Chris Ranglin scored seven straight points in the closing minutes to lead Adelphi to a 65-61 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) led the Dolphins with 18 points (13 in the second half), six rebounds and five assists. Classmates Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) each tallied 11 points, while Zapisek pulled down six rebounds.
Ranglin ended the game with 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Bradley Simpson registered game-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds. Robert Johnson tallied 14 points and John Calarco came off the bench to score 12 points, while Richard Harkins dished out 10 assists.
The opening half of the game featured 10 lead changes and neither team led by more than six points. After junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) made a lay-up to give the Dolphins a 12-11 lead with 13:29 remaining, the Panthers scored five straight points to take their largest lead of the half. Calarco hit a jumper in the paint and Johnson followed with a conventional three-point play on a fast-break.
The Dolphins responded with 12 of the next 16 points to reverse the margin. Zapisek nailed a three-pointer from the left wing, freshman forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) finished off a feed from Zapisek, Tartt converted a jump shot, senior guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) and then Janson made a jumper at the 6:38 mark.
Following a jumper by Simpson and free throw by Ranglin to get Adelphi within a point, Zapisek made a lay-up and senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) drilled a three-pointer to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game.
Harkins countered with a three-pointer, while Duane Morgan followed another Chris Johnson three-pointer with a lay-up to finish the scoring in the first half and get Adelphi within 32-28 at the intermission.
The Panthers opened the second half with five straight points and 11 of the first 13 points. Simpson started the half with a lay-up, Robert Johnson followed with a three-pointer, Ranglin made a lay-up and then Simpson converted a pair of lay-ups for a 39-34 advantage with 16:49 remaining.
Champion registered a conventional three-point play to get the Dolphins within two, but Adelphi scored seven of the next nine points for a seven point lead. Ranglin and Calarco hit consecutive jumpers, Simpson made a free throw and then Johnson made a fast-break lay-up, while Le Moyne's two points came on a Janson lay-up.
After Champion drilled a three-pointer from the right corner to make the score 46-42, Calarco nailed a three-pointer and Morgan made a free throw to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game with 10:39 remaining.
The Dolphins then began chipping away at their deficit before eventually taking the lead with 3:14 remaining. In the 16-6 rally that spanned six minutes and 21 seconds, junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) drilled a three-pointer, Romich made a lay-up, Champion made a free throw and then a lay-up, Janson made a lay-up and a free throw 1:21 apart, Champion nailed two free throws to bring the Dolphins within one and then sophomore guard Chris Secky (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) evened the score at 56 with a free throw with 3:44 remaining. Champion capped the streak with a go-ahead jumper in the paint with 3:14 to go.
Ranglin tied the score at 58 with a jump shot in the paint with 2:34 and followed with a lay-up 49 seconds later to take the lead. Off a Le Moyne timeout with 1:38 to go, Zapisek gave Le Moyne its last lead of the game with a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key with 1:30 left off a pass from Champion. However, Ranglin drilled a three-pointer of his own from the right wing 21 seconds later to regain the lead for his team.
Le Moyne had a pair of shots on its next possession, but could not convert. The Dolphins were able to get the ball back one final time after Calarco stepped out of bounds underneath the Le Moyne basket with 33 seconds to go. However, the Dolphins were unable to get a shot off as Harkins poked the ball away from Champion from behind on a drive to the basket and Robert Johnson was able to come up with the loose ball and was fouled with eight seconds left. He made both free throws to end the game's scoring. Ranglin picked off the in-bounds pass to seal the victory.
Le Moyne (11-14, 7-14 NE-10), which has dropped four straight games to the Panthers, closes out the season on Monday against Pace at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the game, Cormier, Johnson and Joe O'Connor (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) will be honored for their contributions to the program. Johnson enters his final collegiate game with 298 career three-pointers, seven behind the program's record of 305 held by Michael Culley '00.
