#18 BASEBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT PHILADELPHIA, 6-5, 9-2

Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) hit a grand slam in the first game and classmate Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) threw a two-hitter in the nightcap to lead the 18th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Dolphins took the opener, 6-5, and registered a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Rams scored three times in the first inning of game one without recording a hit. Center fielder Rick Reigner and second baseman Kyle DeGennaro drew walks to open the inning and proceeded to steal third and second, respectively. Third baseman CJ Wallowitch then reached on an error by the second baseman, allowing Reigner and DeGennaro to score, while Wallowitch advanced to third on an error on the center fielder. After right fielder Ryan Shellock walked, Wallowitch was retired at home as catcher TJ Burgmann reached on a fielder's choice. Consecutive wild pitches allowed Shellock to score.

The Dolphins answered with five unearned runs on just one hit and a Philadelphia error in the second inning to take the lead. Junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) and senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) drew consecutive walks with one out. Following a fly out, junior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Stinson to score. Botsford followed with a grand slam to give the Dolphins a 5-3 advantage.

Philadelphia pulled within a run in the fifth inning on a two-out solo home run by Shellock.

The Dolphins got the run back in the sixth inning on one hit. Junior left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) walked with two outs and came around to score on a single by senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square).

The Rams scored once on two hits in the bottom of the sixth, but could not plate the tying run. First baseman Jordan Force and left fielder Joe Thayres opened the frame with consecutive singles. Following a sacrifice bunt, shortstop Kevin Giambri grounded out to second to drive in Force. Junior right-hander Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) then came out of the bullpen to end the inning by inducing a ground out.

Junior righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) earned the win after tossing five innings out of the bullpen, while striking out two batters. Carroll earned his first save of the year by retiring all four batters he faced. Ciraco and junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) each had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Don Bradley took the loss for the Rams after giving up six runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings.

In the nightcap, the Rams scored a run on one hit and one Le Moyne error in the first inning. DeGennaro was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a single by Wallowitch. After a fly out, designate hitter Ken McCormick reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed DeGennaro to score.

Le Moyne responded with six runs on three hits and one Philadelphia error in the top of the second inning. After Ciraco and O'Connor drew back-to-back walks to open the frame, the duo pulled off a double-steal. Two batters later, senior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drove in Ciraco as he reached on an error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Freshman second baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) followed with a single through the left side to plate O'Connor. After Botsford was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Wiley singled through the right side to knock in Kalaka and Nagelsmith. Following a walk by Marra to load the bases again, junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney">Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled to right field to drive in Botsford and drive in Botsford and knock Philadelphia starter Mike Ross out of the game. Wiley scored on a sacrifice fly by Ciraco to end the scoring in the inning.

Philadelphia got one run back in the bottom of the inning without recording a hit. Catcher Stephen Uhlak walked with one out and moved to third as Giambri reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Reigner then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Uhlak.

The Dolphins regained their five run lead by scoring once on three hits in the third inning. Kalaka singled through the left side with one out and advanced to second on a two-out single through the right side by Botsford. Wiley then doubled down the left field line to plate Kalaka.

Le Moyne ended the scoring on the day with two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Botsford was hit by a pitch with one out and Wiley followed with a double down the left field line. After Botsford was retired at home as Marra reached on a fielder's choice, Mahoney singled to drive in Wiley and Marra.

Kohout evened his record at 2-2 on the season, including 2-0 as a starter, by striking out nine batters in his second complete-game performance of the campaign. Wiley finished the game with three hits and three RBI, while Mahoney added two hits and three RBI. Mike Ross suffered the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits over one and one-third innings of work.

Le Moyne (11-4), which has won five consecutive games, including three straight regional contests, returns to action on Tuesday for a regional doubleheader at Mansfield beginning at 1:00 p.m.
