Box Score 2 Mansfield, Pa. - Junior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) had two hits and drove in three runs in the opening game and junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of game two to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of a doubleheader at Mansfield on Tuesday afternoon at Shaute Field. The Dolphins defeated the Mounties, 10-2, in the first game and rallied for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Le Moyne opened the first game's scoring with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to the shortstop to open the frame and moved to second on a single up the middle by junior left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi). Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a single to left to drive in Botsford and moved Wiley to third. Junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) then lifted consecutive sacrifice flies to drive in Wiley and Marra, respectively.
Mansfield got on the scoreboard with a run on one hit and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Jon Moser led off the frame with a double to left field and moved to third on a ground out. First baseman Brian Milliman then reached on an error by the shortstop to drive in Moser.
The Dolphins regained their three-run lead in the third on a pair of hits. Marra single the left side with two outs and came around to score on a double to right center by Mahoney.
Mansfield pulled within 4-2 in the bottom of the third following two hits. Center fielder Dylan Woodworth and left fielder Stephen Stopper led off the inning with singles and moved up a base on a walk by third baseman Matt Fisher. Designated hitter Anthony Renz then grounded into a double play, which allowed Woodworth to score.
The Dolphins tripled their lead with four runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Mahoney led off with a double to right center and moved to third on a bunt single by Ciraco. O'Connor followed by blasting an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left center. Following a single by junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and a walk by Botsford around two outs, Wiley singled to the left side of the infield to drive in Speicher.
Le Moyne finished off the scoring in the game with two runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Mahoney walked to open the frame, moved to second on an infield single by freshman pinch-hitter Jeff DeLuglio (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and advanced to third on a single to right center by O'Connor. After Mahoney was retired at home as Speicher reached on a fielder's choice and another out, Redmond singled up the middle to drive in DeLuglio and O'Connor.
Junior right-hander Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) registered six strikeouts to record his fourth win of the season, while yielding just two runs over seven innings for the third straight start. Wiley, Marra, Mahoney and O'Connor each finished with two of Le Moyne's 14 hits. Curtis Harpster took the loss after giving up eight runs on 11 hits over five and two-thirds innings.
In the nightcap, the Mounties got on the scoreboard first with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Conor Thompson led off with an infield single and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Milliman. Right fielder Mitch Iseneker then grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Thompson. Following a bunt single by Jordan Miller, shortstop Jon Taddeo lifted a sac fly to center to plate Milliman.
The Dolphins evened the score at two apiece in the fourth inning on one hit and one Mansfield error. After junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) reached on a fielder's choice and Ciraco drew a walk, O'Connor reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Stinson to score. Following a single down the right field line by sophomore right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), Redmond drove in Ciraco with a sacrifice fly.
Mansfield regained the lead with a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning. Iseneker singled to left center to open the frame, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Woodworth then singled to the right side of the infield to plate Iseneker.
Le Moyne tied the score again with a run on just one hit in the top of the fifth. Wiley led off the inning with a double to left center, moved to third on a fly out and came in to score on a wild pitch.
After neither team scored in the sixth or seventh inning, the Dolphins plated three runs on two hits in the eighth inning. Ciraco and O'Connor were hit by pitches to open the inning. Following a Mansfield pitching change and a sac bunt by Reynolds, Redmond singled up the middle to knock in Ciraco and O'Connor. Botsford then singled to second base to drive in Redmond.
Mansfield scored once in the bottom of the eighth, but that's all it could score. Following an out to start the inning, Thompson launched a home run over the fence down the left field line.
Senior right-hander Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) picked up the win out of the bullpen after recording two strikeouts in an inning of work. Junior righty Kevin Carroll">Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) earned his second save of the campaign by retiring two of the three batters he faced. Matt Fisher suffered the loss after giving up two runs in the eighth inning.
Le Moyne (13-4), winners of seven straight games, opens up its home schedule on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Northeast-10 Conference opponent Merrimack.
