Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) had six hits and four runs scored and senior pitcher Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of a doubleheader of Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins took the opener, 11-2, and registered a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Dolphins started the scoring in the opener with a run on two hits in the first inning. Botsford led off with a single up the middle, stole second and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher. Junior right fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) then doubled down the left field line to drive in Botsford.
Merrimack evened the score with a run on two hits in the third inning. Shortstop Casey Cotter singled to center with two outs, stole second and came around to score on a single to left by designated hitter Joe Mantoni.
Le Moyne regained the lead with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. Wiley led off with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) then singled through the left side to plate Wiley. Following a fly out, junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled to left field to drive home Marra from second base. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse) blasted a two-run homer to left field.
The Warriors got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth without recording a hit. Catcher Dionys Quezada was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a walk by right fielder Rob Crocitto. Following an out and another hit batsman, second baseman Alan Pastyrnak drove in Quezada by reaching on a fielder's choice.
The Dolphins extended their lead to 7-2 with two runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) led off with a single through the left side and moved up a base on a single through the left side by Botsford. Willey followed with a single up the middle to drive in Redmond, while moving up to second as Botsford was thrown out at third. After Wiley stole third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Marra.
After Botsford drilled a solo home run in the sixth inning, the Dolphins scored twice on three hits in the seventh for a 10-2 lead. Senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) singled to the shortstop with one out and advanced to second on single to left by Wiese. After a wild pitch moved each runner up a base, junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled up the middle to drive in Ciraco and Wiese.
The Dolphins finished off the scoring in the game with a run on two hits in the eighth inning. Botsford drew a walk to open the frame and moved to second on a two-out single through the left side by Marra. Freshman pinch-hitter Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) followed with a single up the middle to drive in Botsford.
Senior pitcher Mike Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) registered his second win of season after striking out nine batters and only allowing two hits. Junior right-hander Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) earned his first save by tossing three scoreless innings. Botsford and Wiese each had three hits in the game, while Wiley, Marra, Ciraco and Redmond had two hits apiece. Travis Terrill took the loss after giving up seven runs on 11 hits over four innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on three hits and one Merrimack error. Mahoney led off with a single and Ciraco followed with a bunt single down the third-base line. After Wiese walked to load the bases, Speicher lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Mahoney. Senior catcher Kyle Kalaka">Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed by driving in Ciraco by reaching on an error on the right fielder. Two batters later, Botsford singled to the right side of the infield to plate Wiese.
Le Moyne blew the game open with seven runs on seven hits in the fifth inning. Botsford led off with a single up the middle and moved to second as Wiley was hit by a pitch. Marra then singled through the right side to knock in Botsford. After Mahoney lifted a sac fly to left to score Wiley, Ciraco drilled a two-run homer to left center for a 7-0 advantage. The Dolphins then loaded the bases on a single by Wiese, a walk by Speicher and a single by Kalaka. Redmond followed by flying out to center to plate Wiese. Botsford then singled to center to drive in Speicher and force a Merrimack pitching change. Wiley drove in Kalaka with a single through the left side for the game's final run.
Kohout allowed just four hits in improving to 3-0 as a starter, while striking out four batters. Botsford registered three hits in the game, while Ciraco and Kalaka had two hits. Brett Julian suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits over four and two-third innings.
Le Moyne (15-4, 2-0 NE-10), which registered at least 10 runs for the fourth and fifth times in its nine-game win streak, returns to action on Sunday against UMass Lowell at 1:00 p.m.
