Box Score 2 Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) singled with the bases-loaded to drive in the game-winning in the 13th inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a 5-4 win over UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The nightcap of the doubleheader ended in a 3-3 tie after being called after nine innings due to darkness.
The River Hawks started the scoring in the first game with a run on one hit and a Le Moyne error in the first inning. Center fielder Matt Jacobs was hit by the second pitch of the game and then advanced to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. After single by Geoff DeGroot, Jacobs scored from third as Cam Kneeland hit into a double play.
UMass Lowell added a run on two hits in the second inning. Pat Devlin singled to the left side of the infield with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jimmy Ricoy then singled to right field to drive in Devlin.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard with a run on two hits and a UMass Lowell error in the second inning. After senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) doubled to center with one out, sophomore left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pushed a bunt single down the third base line and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed Ciraco to come around and score.
The River Hawks regained their two-run lead in the sixth with an unearned run on one hit and a Le Moyne error. First baseman Mark Sanborn reached second on a throwing error with two outs and came in to score on a double down the right field line by Devlin.
UMass Lowell pushed its lead to 4-1 in the ninth inning with a run on one hit and an error. Devlin led off the frame with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on fielding error.
Le Moyne forced extra innings with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the ninth. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) singled to center to open the inning. Following a UMass Lowell pitching change, senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) drew a walk on five pitches. Junior right fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) then blasted a three-run homer over the fence in left field to tie the score at four apiece. River Hawk pitcher Dallas Nunes got out of the inning by inducing three straight ground outs.
After three scoreless innings, the Dolphins plated the game-winning run on four hits in the 13th frame. Redmond opened with a single to left, Botsford followed with a single up the middle and Wiley loaded the bases with a bunt single in front of the plate that was too well-placed to draw a throw. Marra then singled up the middle to drive in Redmond and secure Le Moyne's 10th straight win.
Senior Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) earned the win out of the bullpen after striking out six batters over five innings of work, while allowing a run on three hits. Redmond had three hits in the game, all after the eighth inning, while Botsford and Wiley each had two. Nunes took the loss after giving up three runs (his first earned runs of the year) on six hits over four-plus innings on the mound.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with two runs on one hit and a UMass Lowell error. Wiley drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a ground out. Mahoney then singled to right field to drive in Wiley. After Mahoney got to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch and junior catcher Brian Stinson">Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) was walked, Mahoney raced home on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base.
The River Hawks evened the score at two with single runs in the third and fifth innings. Designated hitter Matthew Sanchez walked to open the third, stole second, stole third and came in to score on a throwing error by the catcher. In the fifth, Ricoy doubled down the left field line with one out and came around to score on a double down the right field line by Sanchez.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run on one hit. Wiley walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a single down the left field line by Marra.
Ricoy homered to left field with one out in the top of the ninth inning to knot the score at three.
After the Dolphins failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, the umpires stopped the game due to darkness.
Le Moyne (16-4-1), which tied a game for the first time since a 15-15 contest against St. Joseph's in 1988, returns to action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. for its first Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game against American International at Dick Rockwell Field.
