Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior right-handed pitcher Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) struck out a career-high 11 batters in tossing a two-hit shutout as the 19th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team defeated American International, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play at Dick Rockwell Field.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with two runs on five hits. Junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a single up the middle by senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School). Sophomore left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse) then reached on a bunt single down the first base line to load the bases. Junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) followed with a single to left center to drive in Stinson. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) then singled to left to plate Wiese.
In the fourth inning, Le Moyne scored five runs on eight hits. Stinson led off with a single through the left side, moved to second on a single to left by Ciraco and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wiese then doubled down the right field line to knock in Stinson and Ciraco, while moving to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Speicher followed with a single through the left side to drive in Wiese and moved to second on a single to right by Redmond. After a double play, junior right fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) singled to the left side of the infield to drive in Speicher from third. Following a single through the left side by senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square), junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney">Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled through the left side to plate Wiley.
Cannon, making his third career start, retired 19 batters before giving up his first hit en route to registering his first career complete game and the first nine-inning complete game by a Dolphin this year. Wiese and Redmond each had three hits in the contest, while Mahoney, Stinson, Ciraco and Speicher had two hits apiece. Matt Lee took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after allowing seven runs on 13 hits over three and two-thirds innings pitched.
Le Moyne (17-4-1, 4-0-1 NE-10, 1-0 SW), which is unbeaten in its last 12 games, returns to the diamond on Thursday for a non-conference game at Post University at 3:00 p.m.
