FLAGLER RALLIES FOR 7-5 WIN OVER #10 BASEBALL

Savannah, Ga. – Third baseman Cade Smith went 3-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to lead Flagler to a come-from-behind 7-5 win over the 10th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon in the Savannah Invitational at Grayson Stadium.

The Saints, who opened the season with a win over then-#1 and current #2 West Florida, got on the scoreboard first with a run on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the first inning. Following an out to start the inning, Smith doubled to left center, left fielder Brett Moreland flared a single to shallow right and catcher Kyle Foti drew a walk to load the bases. Center fielder Jay Laurienzo then hit the ball back to senior southpaw Mike Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), who threw home to retire Smith, but the relay throw to first base was wide, allowing Moreland to score.

Le Moyne answered back with five runs on four hits and two Flagler errors in the top of the second inning. Senior right fielder Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) led off the frame by blasting a solo home run over the fence in left field. Following an out and a single through the right side by junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College), senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) tripled to left center to drive in Redmond, while scoring himself on a throwing error by the shortstop. Junior left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) followed by reaching on a throwing error by the second baseman and proceeded to steal second base. Junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then drilled a two-run homer to left field.

Flagler (12-6) pulled within 5-2 with a run on two hits in the third inning. The Saints loaded the bases without any outs on walks by Fudala and Smith and a single to center by Moreland. After a strikeout, Laurienzo singled to left to plate Fudala.

The Saints evened the score at five apiece with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. After consecutive doubles by Nate Fudala and Smith to start the frame, Moreland doubled right field to knock in Fudala. After a fly out and a walk by Laurienzo to load the bases, John Sgromolo singled through the right side to drive in Smith and Moreland.

Flagler regained the lead in the sixth inning with a run on two hits. Will Percy singled to second to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a ground out and came around to score on a single up the middle by Smith.

The Saints tacked on a run in the seventh as Laurienzo launched a lead-off homer to left center.

Senior righty Ed Kohout">Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) took the loss for the Dolphins out of the bullpen after giving up two runs over four hits over two innings of work, while striking out two. Jonathan Armold earned his fourth win of the year after yielding five runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings pitched. Danny Brown picked up his first save after tossing three scoreless innings and striking out three batters.

Le Moyne (4-2) returns to action at the Savannah Invitational on Monday with a doubleheader against Wayne State (Mich.) University at 11:00 a.m.
