Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga. – Senior righty Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) threw a four-hit shutout to lead the 14th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a split of a doubleheader with Wayne State (Neb.) College on Thursday afternoon at the Savannah Invitational at Grayson Stadium. The Dolphins won the opener, 1-0, but fell in the nightcap, 3-1.
After six and one-half scoreless innings, the Dolphins recorded the walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opening game. Senior right fielder Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) drew a walk to open the inning. After a Wayne State pitching change, junior first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) reached on a bunt single. Following a throwing error that allowed Ciraco to move to third and a strikeout, junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was then hit by a pitch to force in Ciraco with the game-winning run.
Kohout struck out six batters and faced just five batters over the minimum in registering his first victory of the season. O'Connor went 2-for-3 in the game as the only player from either team to record multiple hits. Tom Doran took the loss for the Wildcats after issuing the seventh-inning walk to Ciraco.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored single runs in each of the first two innings. Center fielder Pat Burkhart led off the game by drawing a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, first baseman Travis Parsons singled to drive in Burkhart. In the second inning, designated hitter Michael Herman singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and came around to score on a single to right field by third baseman Jake Ritzdorf.
Wayne State added an insurance run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Shortstop Braulio Acosta led off with a single and advanced to second on a single by right fielder Mike Bisenius. After a double play erased Bisenius at second and a walk by left fielder Justin Beranek, Acosta scored on a double-steal.
The Dolphins scored once on two hits and a Wayne State error in the bottom of the seventh, but left the potential tying run stranded at first. Junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off the frame with a double to left and moved to third on a ground out. After the inning's second out, junior designated hitter Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) reached on a throwing error that allowed Mahoney to score. Junior pinch-hitter Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) then singled to left to bring the winning run to the plate, but Nick Ragan was able to register his only strikeout of the game to end the contest.
Freshman southpaw Jon Dunn">Jon Dunn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss after yielding two runs (one earned) over five innings in his first collegiate start. Ragan earned the victory after not allowing an earned run in the complete-game performance.
Le Moyne (6-4), which defeated the Wildcats, 6-3, on Tuesday, returns to action on Friday at the Savannah Invitational with a pair of games. The Dolphins take on Urbana at 10:00 a.m. and Wayne State at 2:30 p.m.
