Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga. – Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) registered five hits and five runs batted in to lead the 14th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a pair of wins over Urbana and Wayne State (Neb.) College on Friday at the Savannah Invitational at Grayson Stadium. The Dolphins defeated Urbana, 12-8, in the first game and posted a 10-6 victory over Wayne State in 11 innings.
Urbana got on the scoreboard first with three runs on one hit in the second inning. After designated hitter Kyle England led off with a double, left fielder Matt Mays and third baseman Drew Ryan each drew walks to load the bases. Following a strikeout, second baseman Taylor Nehls walked to force in England. Center fielder Aaron Bingham then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Mays, while Ryan scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the third inning to cut their deficit to one. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) and senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) opened the frame with singles. Following an out that allowed Redmond to move to third, Marra grounded out to drive in Redmond. Junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed with a single to plate Botsford.
The Blue Knights got the two runs back in the top of the fourth on just one hit. Mays and Ryan drew consecutive walks and catcher Robert Tavone Jr. followed with a single to load the bases. Nehls then knocked in Mays by drawing a walk. Bingham followed with a sac fly to right to drive home Ryan.
Le Moyne took the lead with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) and junior Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) opened the frame with singles. Following a sacrifice bunt and a walk by Redmond to load the bases, Botsford greeted new pitcher, Joemar Melendez, with a single to plate Ciraco and O'Connor. Two batters later, Marra doubled to drive in Botsford and junior left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi), who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Dolphins extended their lead with a run on one hit and one Urbana error. Ciraco singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Le Moyne added five runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Following an Urbana pitching change after a Redmond lead-off single and two-out walk by Marra, Mahoney singled to drive in Redmond. Junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) then blasted a three-run homer for an 11-5 lead. Ciraco then walked, stole second and came around to score on a single by O'Connor.
Urbana scored three times on one hit in the eighth inning to finish off the game's scoring. With one out, Mays singled, Ryan walked and Tavone Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Ben Dellaposta followed by drawing a walk to force in pinch-runner Matt Watson. Bingham then walked to plate Ryan. Following a pitching change, right fielder Jordan Pergrem knocked in Tavone Jr. as he reached on a fielder's choice.
Senior southpaw Mike Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) picked up his first victory of the year after striking out eight batters, while allowing just two hits. Ciraco finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Botsford, Marra, Mahoney, O'Connor and Redmond each had two hits. Melendez took the loss for the Blue Knights after giving up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Against Wayne State, the Dolphins opened the scoring with two runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled with two outs and advanced to third on a double to left by O'Connor. Senior catcher Kyle Kalaka">Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a single to plate Speicher and O'Connor.
Le Moyne extended its lead to three with a run on two hits in the third inning. Marra led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Mahoney. After a ground out, Speicher drove in Marra as he reached on a fielder's choice.
Marra pushed Le Moyne's lead to five with a two-run home run in the fifth inning after Wiley led off with a single.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on two Le Moyne errors. Brett Keim walked with one out and moved to second as center fielder Pat Burkhart reached on an error by the second baseman. After the second out of the inning was made, right fielder Mike Bisenius drew a walk to load the bases. First baseman Travis Parsons followed by drawing a walk to force in Keim. Designated hitter Michael Herman then reached on error by the shortstop, allowing Burkhart to score.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the sixth inning. O'Connor led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kalaka. Two batters later, Botsford singled up the middle to drive in O'Connor.
Wayne State started its comeback with two runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the seventh inning. Shortstop Braulio Acosta singled with one out and moved to third on a two-out single by Parsons. After Parsons advanced to second on a wild pitch, Herman reached on an error by the center fielder, which allowed Acosta and Parsons to score.
The Wildcats added a run on one hit in the eighth. Third baseman Jake Ritzdorf was hit by a pitch to open the frame and catcher Cris Ely followed with a single to left. Two batters later, Ritzdorf scored from second as Burkhart reached on a fielder's choice.
Wayne State forced extra innings with a run on two hits in the ninth inning. Bisenius led off with a triple to right field and came in to score on a single up the middle by Parsons.
After neither team scored in the 10th, the Dolphins scored four times on four hits in the 11th inning. O'Connor started the frame with a triple to right center and then scored on a single by Kalaka. After a sac bunt and Botsford being hit by a pitch, Wiley singled to knock in Kalaka. Following a walk by Marra to load the bases, Mahoney singled to drive in Botsford and Wiley.
Marra, who moved to the mound to start the 10th inning, struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to seal the victory. In registering his first career victory, Marra struck out five batters over two scoreless innings. Wiley, Marra and O'Connor each had three hits for the Dolphins, while Botsford, Mahoney and Kalaka had two hits apiece. Trevor Reeves suffered the loss for the Wildcats after giving up four runs on four hits over two innings of work.
Le Moyne (8-4) closes out play at the Savannah Invitational on Saturday against California (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m.
