Box Score Greensburg, Pa. – Kameron Taylor scored 17 points to lead Seton Hill University to a 71-52 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the McKenna Center.
Senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) opened the season with a team-best 14 points (7 in each half) and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) registered nine points and team-highs of six rebounds and four assists, while junior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) posted nine points and five rebounds.
Taylor added a game high-tying eight rebounds and a game-best four steals to his 17-point performance. Malachi Leonard registered 13 points and eight rebounds, while David Windsor had 12 points, six assists and four rebounds. Oliver McGlade was the fourth Griffin in double-figures with 10 points. Max Kenyi tied Taylor and Leonard for the most rebounds in the game, while adding four points, three assists and three steals.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points on a lay-up by Romich and a three-pointer by Champion, but the Griffins responded with eight of the next 10 points to take their first lead of the game with 16:03 left in the first half. Leonard and Kenyi each had four points in the span.
After the teams went back-and-forth over the next 7:03, resulting in an 18-16 Le Moyne lead on a Mahoney three-pointer, Seton Hill scored nine straight points to take the lead for good. Taylor had five of the points in the streak, while Noah Davis made two jump shots.
The teams each scored nine points over the last five and one-half minutes of the stanza to go into the locker room with the Griffins leading 34-27.
Seton Hill opened the second half with eight of the first 10 points to extend its lead to 13 points with 16:55 remaining. Four different Griffins scored in the span.
The Dolphins countered with a 6-1 run to close within 43-35 with 15:25 to play, but that's as close as they would get. Sophomore guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) started the spurt with a three-pointer and then graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) made three free throws.
The Griffins then rattled off 16 straight points to blow the game open as the Dolphins went scoreless for eight minutes and one second. Windsor had the first four points of the streak and the last three, while Taylor had four points, McGlade nailed a three-pointer and Leonard made two free throws.
After missing 11 straight shots, the Dolphins made three consecutive attempts to trim their deficit to 61-43 with 5:58 remaining. Mahoney buried a three-pointer to end the drought, freshman forward Stan Buczek">Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) followed with a lay-up and then Champion nailed a three-pointer.
The teams went back-and-forth over the last five and one-half minutes of the game to deliver the final score.
Le Moyne (0-1), which lost its season-opener by at least 19 points for the third time in four years, opens its home schedule on Saturday against Mansfield University at 7:30 p.m.
