BALANCED SCORING PROPELS MEN'S BASKETBALL TO 81-69 VICTORY OVER MANSFIELD

Syracuse, N.Y. – All five starters scored in double digits as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team recorded an 81-67 win over Mansfield University on Saturday night in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) led the Dolphins with 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half, while dishing out six assists and grabbing three rebounds. Graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) recorded 16 points, five rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Sophomores Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) and Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) posted 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Mahoney grabbed five rebounds and Lovell tied a career-high with six assists. Junior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Stan Buczek">Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) came off the bench to score 10 points, grab a team-best eight rebounds (four offensive) and hand out five assists.

Charles Pemberton led the Mounties with a game-high 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Joe Bell registered a double-double with 16 points and a game-best 10 rebounds, while dishing out six assists. Charles Becoats was the third Mountie in double-figures with 16 points.

The Dolphins exploded out of the gates in their home opener with the first nine points and 17 of the first 19. Lovell started the scoring with a fast-break lay-up and later added a conventional three-point play, Mahoney nailed a pair of three-pointers, Janson scored twice in the paint and Romich made a lay-up off a feed from Janson.

Following a Lovell three-pointer from the right corner that gave the Dolphins a 24-6 lead with 10:54 left in the half, Mansfield tallied 12 of the next 16 points to trim its deficit to 10 with 7:15 remaining. Pemberton scored eight of the points in the paint, while Bell had the other four.

After the teams split the game's next eight points, the Dolphins ran off 11 straight points over a span of 3:08 to open up their largest lead of the game. Buczek had the first four points, Janson made three free throws, Champion converted a foul shot and then Mahoney nailed a three-pointer in transition off a pass from Champion.

Brady Burke pulled the Mounties within 43-25 at the intermission with a three-pointer with 53 seconds left in the stanza.

Champion opened the scoring in the second half with a fast-break three-pointer, but Mansfield countered with a 10-2 run to narrow its deficit to 13, which was as close as it would get until the final 22 seconds of the game. Becoats buried two three-pointers in the streak, while Pemberton added a conventional three-point play and Bell made a free throw.

Champion nailed a pair of three-pointers around a three-pointer by Mahoney (which Champion picked up the assist on) as the Dolphins pushed their lead back to 20 points (57-37) with 14:15 left.

The teams then went back-and-forth over the next 10:20, with Le Moyne's lead dropping to as low as 13 and as high as 20 points, but mainly staying between 14 and 17.

After Janson made two free throws with 3:55 left to give the Dolphins their last 20-point lead, the Mounties closed out the game with 11 of the last 14 points. Ryan Krawczeniuk posted six of the points, while Becoats made three free throws and Ralik Wise made a lay-up. Buczek ended Le Moyne's scoring with a free throw with 39 seconds left.

Le Moyne (1-1), which won its home opener for the first time since the 2009-10 season, while also scoring its most points in its home opener since that same season, starts Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at the University of New Haven at 7:30 p.m.
