HOLY FAMILY RALLIES TO EDGE MEN'S BASKETBALL, 67-65

Philadelphia, Pa. – Derrick Stewart made a free throw with 1:31 left to break a tie as Holy Family University rallied to defeat the Le Moyne College men's basketball team, 67-65, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Campus Center.

Junior guard Naté Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) led four Dolphins in double digit scoring with 14 points in 24 minutes off the bench, while adding six rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) recorded 13 points, including a team-best eight in the first half. Graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and sophomore forward Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) each tallied 12 points, while Janson had four rebounds and four blocks and Mahoney had five rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Nate Champion">Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) led the Dolphins with a game-high eight rebounds, while posting eight points (his first game under 13 this season) and five assists.

Alberto Munoz led the Tigers with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Ervin Ezell registered 18 points, 11 after halftime, dished out nine assists and recorded four steals. Khiry Hankins came off the bench to hit four three-pointers in the first half for his 12 points.

The game of runs started at the opening tip. After the Dolphins scored six straight points on baskets by Romich, Champion and Janson to take a 6-3 lead, Holy Family scored 10 straight points. Munoz hit a three-pointer, Ezell made a lay-up for the lead, Munoz followed with a fast-break three-pointer and then Ezell made a fast-break lay-up with 14:15 left.

After the Dolphins pulled to within two on three occasions over the next 7:42, the last of which was 21-19, with 6:33 left in the half, the Tigers got three-pointers from Isaiah Gans and Hankins to open up their largest lead of the game (27-19) with 3:08 remaining in the half.

Following a baseline jumper by Mahoney to pull the Dolphins within three with 10 seconds left in the half, Hankins nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Tigers a 33-27 lead at the intermission.

The Dolphins opened the second half with seven of the first eight points to knot the score at 34 with 17:26 to play. Champion started the half with a three-pointer, Mahoney made a pair of free throws and then Lovell followed an Ezell free throw with a lay-up.

After Turhan Griffin and Romich traded lay-ups, the Tigers scored six of the next eight points to take a four-point advantage. Munoz opened the run with a three-pointer, Gans made a jump shot and then Ezell converted a foul shot.

Following the teams trading 3-0 runs and 4-0 runs, resulting in a 49-45 Holy Family lead with 11:01 left, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and nine of the next 10 to take their first lead since 6-3, a span of almost 27 minutes. Janson ignited the run with a conventional three-point play, Gause followed with a jumper for the lead and then he made two free throws, while Janson capped the streak with a jumper for a 54-50 edge with 8:36 to play.

After the teams split the next eight points over a span of 1:24, Holy Family scored five straight points to regain the lead with 6:12 to play. Munoz hit a three-pointer and then Ezell made a lay-up for the lead.

The Dolphins answered back with a 5-0 run of their own for a 63-59 lead with 4:43 to play. Mahoney answered Ezell's lay-up with one of his own to take the lead back and then Champion nailed a three-pointer from the right side.

Out of a Holy Family timeout, Ezell made a three-pointer to beat the shot clock to pull the Tigers within one.

After Janson made two free throws with 3:40 left to push Le Moyne's lead back to three, Holy Family scored the last five points of the game. Munoz tied the score at 65 with a three-pointer from the left corner with 2:42 left. After getting an offensive rebound and being fouled with 1:31 to play, Stewart made the first of two free throw attempts for the lead.

Following two empty possessions by the Dolphins and one by Holy Family, Munoz made a free throw with eight seconds left to deliver the final score. Le Moyne had one final possession, but turned the ball over before being able to get a shot off.

Le Moyne (5-5, 5-4 East Region), which has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this year, opens the 2014 portion of its schedule and wraps up its non-conference slate on Thursday, January 2 at Queens College at 7:00 p.m.
