BASEBALL FALLS TO #19/RV SETON HILL, 9-5, IN OPENING GAME OF SERIES

Greensburg, Pa. – Right fielder Cody Herald had three hits and drove in the eventual game-winning run to lead #19/RV Seton Hill University to a 9-5 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with a run on three hits in the top of the second inning. Senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) led off the frame with a double to left field. Following a pair of strikeouts, freshman third baseman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to center to plate Stinson.

Seton Hill took the lead with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third. Third baseman Jesse Cooper singled with one out and moved to second as shortstop Brendon Costantino was hit by a pitch. After left fielder Brandon Jossey reached on an error by the right fielder to load the bases and a strikeout, catcher Michael Cima doubled down the left field line to drive in Cooper, Costantino and Jossey.

Le Moyne evened the score at three apiece with two runs in the fifth inning. After junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to left and stole second base, senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) blasted a home run.

The Griffins regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Following a lead-off double to center by designated hitter Chris Miller, Cima doubled to left center to knock in Miller. For the second straight inning, senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) was able to get out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts.

The Dolphins tied the score again in the sixth with a run on two hits. After senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led off with a double to left, Swetman singled to left field to drive in Speicher.

Seton Hill took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and Jossey on second following a single and a stolen base, Cima reached on an error by the pitcher, while allowed Jossey to come around for the go-ahead run. Following a double by center fielder Jackson Boyd, Herald singled to right center to plate Cima and Boyd.

The Griffins tacked on a run in the seventh inning without getting a hit. Following a walk and two hit batsman around a strikeout, Jossey was the third straight batter to get hit by a pitch, forcing in second baseman Pat McCarthy.

Le Moyne got the run back in the eighth. After Speicher led off with another double and senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) walked, Speicher raced home as the Griffins turned a double play.

Seton Hill finished off the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth. After Herald singled to right with one out and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, he scored on a ground out by McCarthy.

Senior Michael Kitts">Michael Kitts (East Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) in one and one-third innings out of the bullpen, while striking out three batters. Carroll registered eight strikeouts over the first five innings, while allowing just one earned run. Sam Bashioum earned the win out of the bullpen after yielding two runs on four hits over four and one-third innings. Alex Haines, named by Baseball America as the Division II preseason Pitcher of the Year and the top 2013 MLB Draft prospect, did not factor into the decision after allowing three runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out nine batters.

Le Moyne (0-4) and Seton Hill will play at doubleheader on Monday. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
