Box Score 2 Greensburg, Pa. – Seniors Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) and Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) had three hits each to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader split with #19/28 Seton Hill University on Monday afternoon. The Dolphins won the opening game, 11-2, but the Griffins took the nightcap, 3-1.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning with seven runs on five hits and two Seton Hill errors. Senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led off with a single to center and moved to second as graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, freshman third baseman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to the shortstop, who then committed an error, which allowed Speicher to score. Following a walk by graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) to load the bases, Mahoney scored on an error by the catcher as junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on a fielder's choice. Ciraco then singled to left field to drive in Swetman. Wiley followed with a single to knock in Redmond and Wiese. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) then doubled down the right field line to plate Ciraco and Wiley.
The Dolphins added a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. After Mahoney led off with a single and senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) doubled to right center, Stinson raced home on a wild pitch. Following a pair of strikeouts, Wiese singled to left field to knock in Stinson.
Seton Hill got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Following a lead-off double to left center by left fielder Dan Abbennante, shortstop Brendan Costantino homered to left center to pull the Griffins within 9-2.
Le Moyne tacked on two runs on two hits and a Seton Hill error in the seventh inning. Redmond led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a single by Wiese, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Wiese scored from third as O'Connor reached on an error by the third baseman.
Sophomore southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned the win after striking out six batters in a complete-game performance, while yielding two runs on six hits. Brad Schnelle took the loss, just his third in 18 career decisions, after giving up seven runs (one earned) on eight hits over four innings on the mound.
After three scoreless innings to start the nightcap, the Griffins scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After catcher Michael Cima led off with a single to left field, center fielder Jackson Boyd blasted a home run to left center. After second baseman Pat McCarthy singled and stole second base, he stole third base and was able to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
Le Moyne cut into its deficit with one run on one hit in the next half inning. Speicher led off with a triple to center field and then scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore lefty Jon Dunn">Jon Dunn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on four hits over four innings of work, while striking out three batters. Brett Sullivan tossed a complete game to earn the win for the Griffins, striking out three batters and allowing just two hits.
Le Moyne (1-5) returns to action on Saturday at Dowling for the start of a four-game series. First pitch with the Golden Lions is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
