BASEBALL EARNS SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER AT #16/10 SHIPPENSBURG, 2-1, 5-11

Shippensburg, Pa. – Graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) drove in the tying run to force extra innings and then scored the winning run as the Le Moyne College baseball team rallied for a 2-1 win in 10 innings over #16/10 Shippensburg University on Friday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Fairchild Field. Shippensburg took the nightcap, 11-5.

Shippensburg got on the scoreboard first in the opener with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Mike Marcinko led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a single to right field by center fielder Michael Douglas. After catcher Tyler Shover walked to load the bases, first baseman Pat Kregeloh lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Marcinko.

The Dolphins evened the score in the top of the seventh inning with a run on one hit. Senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) was hit by a pitch to open the frame. After pinch-running in between a pair of fly outs, freshman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) stole second base. Graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) singled to left field to drive in Charbonneau with the game-tying run.

Le Moyne won the game with a run on three hits in the 10th inning. Ciraco led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior center fielder Pat Wiese Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) then doubled down the right field line to knock in Ciraco with the go-ahead run.

Sophomore Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) earned his first win as a Dolphin by striking out two batters over three innings out of the bullpen. Austin Bartley suffered the loss after giving up one run in one inning of work. Wiese and senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) each had three hits, while Ciraco had two hits.

The Dolphins struck first in the nightcap with two runs on two hits in the first inning. Ciraco led off by drawing a walk and then advanced to third on a single up the middle by junior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell). Ciraco then scored on a sac fly to center by Wiese. After Reynolds stole second, he scored on a single down the right field line by O'Connor.

Shippensburg answered back with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Douglas singled through the left side with one out and moved to second on a walk by Shover. Kregeloh followed with a double to left center to drive in Douglas and Shover. After first baseman Dan Wimer was hit by a pitch and third baseman Cal Hogan walked to load the bases, second baseman Jimmy Spanos singled to right center with two outs to plate Kregeloh and Wimer before Hogan was thrown out at third.

Le Moyne cut its deficit to one with a run on one hit and a Shippensburg error in the third inning. Ciraco opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the left fielder. Following a pair of strikeouts, O'Connor singled through the right side to drive in Ciraco.

The Raiders blew the game open with seven runs on seven hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the third. Wimer singled to left field with one out and moved to third on a single up the middle by Hogan, who took second on the throw. Right fielder Cody Kulp then singled down the left field line to drive in Wimer and Hogan. After Spanos reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second, he took third on a single by left fielder Bobby Atwell. Marcinko followed with a double down the left field line to knock in Spanos. Douglas then singled to the left side of the infield to plate Atwell. Shover then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Marcinko to score. Kregeloh, who started the game on the mound, helped his own cause with a single up the middle to drive in Douglas and Shover with his team's final runs of the game.

Le Moyne got one run back in the top of the fourth on three hits. Senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled up the middle to open the frame and advanced to third on a single through the left side by Stinson. Graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) then singled up the middle to knock in Speicher.

The Dolphins completed the scoring in the game with one run on two hits and a Shippensburg error. Reynolds led off with a double to right center and took third on a one-single through the right side by O'Connor. Sophomore third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy of Albany) then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Reynolds to score.

Sophomore Ryan Davis">Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits over three innings pitched. Kregeloh improved to 3-2 on the year after yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits over six innings, while striking out four batters. O'Connor had three more hits in game two, while Reynolds had two hits.

Le Moyne (6-8) continues its four-game series with the Raiders on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader has been pushed back an hour and is now scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
