CARROLL AND DAVIS PITCH BASEBALL TO SWEEP OF DOWLING, 5-3, 7-0

Brookhaven, N.Y. – Senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) and sophomore lefty Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) tossed complete games to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 5-3, and defeated the Golden Lions, 7-0, in the nightcap.

The Dolphins scored the first run of the day without getting a hit in the first inning. Senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on an error by the third baseman. Ciraco then raced home on a wild pitch.

Dowling evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman JC Brandmaier led off with a single to center, moved to second on a walk by center fielder Rob Veltre and then took third on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Ian Schneider. Right fielder Johnathan Cruz followed with a ground out to second to drive in Brandmaier.

Le Moyne, which defeated the Golden Lions, 17-4, in an elimination game in last year's NCAA East Regional, regained the lead with three runs on three hits in the top of the third inning. Ciraco led off with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a triple to left center by senior center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi). After senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) was hit by a pitch, senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Wiley. Two batters later, senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled through the left side to drive in O'Connor.

The Golden Lions got two of the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman Andrew Abreu walked with one out and advanced to second on a single through the right side by designated hitter Sean Craig. After stealing third, Abreu scored on an error by the third baseman. Following a strikeout, Craig stole third and scored on an error by the catcher.

The Dolphins added an insurance run on one hit and a Dowling error in the seventh inning. O'Connor led off the frame with a single to center and moved to second on a sac bunt by Speicher. After Stinson walked and freshman third baseman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, O'Connor scored on an error by the pitcher.

Carroll earned his first win of the season after striking out seven batters over the seven innings, while yielding just one earned run on four hits. Tyler Badamo took the loss for the Golden Lions after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings, while striking out six hitters. Eight of Le Moyne's nine starters recorded a hit, with O'Connor going 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck for the only runs they would need in the first inning. Ciraco opened the game by reaching on an error by the third baseman. After Wiley singled to center with one out, Ciraco scored from second on a passed ball. O'Connor then drove in Wiley from third with a groundout to the first baseman.

Following four scoreless innings, the Dolphins scored five runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off with double to left field and then stole third with one out. Junior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) followed with a double to left field to knock in Mahoney. Following walks by graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond">Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) and Ciraco to load the bases, Swetman reached on a fielder's choice to plate Reynolds. After a pop out, O'Connor singled to third base to drive in Redmond. Speicher then drew a walk to force in Ciraco. Mahoney capped the game's scoring by driving in Swetman with a single through the left side.

Davis improved to 2-0 on the season after striking out 10 batters in his second straight complete-game performance, while allowing just three singles. Adam Brown suffered the loss after giving up two unearned runs on six hits over five innings of work. Reynolds posted a career-high three hits, while Mahoney, O'Connor and Wiley each had two hits.

Le Moyne (3-5) returns to Golden Lions Field on Sunday for another doubleheader with Dowling beginning at 12:00 p.m.
