FRANKLIN PIERCE RALLIES FOR 3-2 WIN OVER BASEBALL

Box Score

Rindge, N.H. – Left fielder John Razzino doubled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning to give Franklin Pierce a 3-2 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field.

Due to the game originally scheduled to be played in Syracuse, but moved to Rindge due to unplayable field conditions at Dick Rockwell Field, the Dolphins served as the home team and batted in the bottom of each inning.

The Ravens got on the scoreboard first with a run on one hit in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Rich Patrizio led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After the second out of the inning, Patrizio raced home on a wild pitch.

Le Moyne, which defeated the Ravens twice last year to win the Northeast-10 Conference championship, answered with two runs on one hit and two Franklin Pierce errors in the bottom of the third. Freshman shortstop Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was awarded first base on catcher's interference to begin the frame. Charbonneau then took second on a wild pitch and moved to third as junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman with one out. After Wiese stole second, senior center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) doubled to left field to drive in Charbonneau and Wiese. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) was hit by a pitch and freshman third baseman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) drew a walk around a strikeout to load the bases, but Trevor Graham was able to escape the jam without further trouble with another strikeout.

Franklin Pierce evened the score at two apiece with a run on two hits in the top of the seventh inning. Right fielder Nick LaCroix doubled to right center to open the inning and took third on a one-out wild pitch. O'Herron then singled up the middle to knock in LaCroix.

The Dolphins got three different players to second base in the bottom of the inning and two more in the eighth, but could not advance any of the five base runners to third.

Franklin Pierce took the lead with one run on two hits in the top of the ninth inning. Designated hitter Matt Walsh singled to the hole at shortstop with one out and was replaced at first by pinch runner Ryan Boswell, who then stole second base. After Boswell took third on a groundout, Razzino doubled down the right field line to plate Boswell.

Wiese walked on six pitches with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Joe Flynn was able to induce a groundout to end the game.

Sophomore Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) suffered the loss after giving up one run on two hits in one inning on the mound. Senior Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) struck out 10 batters over the first eight innings, while yielding two runs on four hits. Senior catcher Brian Stinson">Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) recorded two of Le Moyne's three hits in the contest. Wiley, who reached base on his first four plate appearances (HBP, 2B, BB, FC), stole five bases to establish a new Le Moyne single-game record. The previous record of four was set by Eddie Harper '03 (May 13, 2000) and later tied by Wiese (April 7, 2012) and Brett Botsford '12 (May 12, 2012)

Brendan O'Rourke earned the win after recording four outs out of the bullpen, while allowing just one hit. Flynn earned the save by getting the final two outs of the game. Graham struck out 11 over his six innings on the mound.

Le Moyne (6-11, 0-1 NE-10), which has dropped four straight games for the second time this season, returns to Pappas Field on Sunday to take on #7/14 Southern New Hampshire University at 9:00 a.m.
