BASEBALL RALLIES FOR 5-4 WIN AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL IN DIVISION OPENER

Springfield, Mass. – Freshman shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the eighth inning as the Le Moyne College baseball team rallied for a 5-4 win over American International College on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at AIC Park.

The Dolphins struck first with a run on one hit in the first inning. Junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) walked with one out, but was replaced at first by senior center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi), who reached on a fielder's choice. After Wiley stole second, senior first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) singled to plate Wiley.

American International (8-7, 1-1 NE-10, 1-1 SW) took the lead with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third. Catcher Dan Fenton led off with a single to left center, but was replaced at first when shortstop Eddie Ritch reached on a fielder's choice. After center fielder Chris Amate walked, third baseman Cam MacDonald singled to center to knock in Ritch. Following a strikeout, left fielder Dave Clark singled through the left side to drive in Amate with the go-ahead run. After a walk by designated hitter Lucas Vallas to load the bases, first baseman Mike Coyne singled through the right side to plate MacDonald.

Le Moyne answered back with two runs on one hit and an AIC error. With one out, senior third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Two batters later, senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) blasted his first home run of the season to even the score at three apiece.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead with a run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coyne led off with a single to right center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Fenton singled and took second on wild pitch, Amate singled to center with two outs to knock in Coyne.

The Dolphins took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning. Following a one-out single to left field by O'Connor, junior right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) tripled to right field to plate O'Connor with the game-tying run. After a groundout, Swetman singled through the right side to drive in Reynolds.

Freshman right-hander Frank O'Brien (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) earned his first career win after striking out two batters over one and one-third innings out of the bullpen. Sophomore righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) earned his first collegiate save by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, including the final two via strikeout. Stinson recorded three of Le Moyne's 10 hits, while O'Connor and graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond">Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) each had two hits.

Steve Pino took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after yielding two runs on four hits over one and one-third innings out of the bullpen. Clark had three hits for the Yellow Jackets, while MacDonald, Coyne and Fenton each had two hits.

Le Moyne (8-11, 2-1 NE-10, 1-0 SW) returns to action on Friday at Adelphi University at 3:30 p.m. The three-game series, which continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., was supposed to be played in Syracuse, but was moved to Garden City due to unplayable field conditions at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins will serve as the home team in each game and bat in the bottom of each inning.
