Box Score Garden City, N.Y. – First baseman Anthony Zarrella went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead Adelphi University to a 9-7 victory over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Bonomo Field.
Due to the game originally scheduled to be played in Syracuse, but moved to Garden City due to unplayable field conditions at Dick Rockwell Field, the Dolphins served as the home team and batted in the bottom of each inning.
Adelphi opened the game's scoring with two runs on three hits in the first inning. Center fielder John Campbell singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a single through the right side by Zarrella. After Zarrella stole second, Campbell scored on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Richard Mejia. Right fielder Nick Zito then singled up the middle to drive in Zarrella.
The Panthers blew the game open with seven runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning. Zarrella led off with a single through the right side, but was replaced at first as Mejia hit into a fielder's choice. Zito followed with a triple to right center to drive in Mejia. Left fielder Chad Houghton then singled through the right side to knock in Zito for Adelphi's fourth run of the game. After catcher Kevin Hutzel singled through the right side to push Houghton to third, designated hitter Kyle Ambury singled up the middle to drive in Houghton. Second baseman Vincent Sharkey followed with a double down the left field line to plate Hutzel. Following a groundout and a walk by Campbell to load the bases, Zarrella doubled down the left field line to drive in Ambury, Sharkey and Campbell and knock Le Moyne starter Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) out of the game.
Le Moyne got on the scoreboard with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) led off with a single through the left side. After a line out, senior first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) singled to left field. Following a double steal by Ciraco and O'Connor, junior right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled through the right side to plate Ciraco. Senior third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) then singled through the right side also to knock in O'Connor. After a double-steal by Reynolds and Speicher, Reynolds scored on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima).
The Dolphins continued their comeback attempt with four runs on five hits in the seventh inning. Senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) led off with a single up the middle and took second on a single to left center by graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College). Following a single to left center by junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) that loaded the bases, Ciraco singled to left center to drive in Stinson and Redmond. After a walk by senior center fielder Zack Wiley">Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) to load the bases again, an Adelphi pitching change and a strikeout, Reynolds singled up the middle to plate Wiese and Ciraco. Matt Abramowitz got out of the jam by inducing a groundout and striking out a batter.
Le Moyne got its first batter of the inning on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not complete its comeback.
Carroll (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season after yielding nine runs on 11 hits over two and two-thirds innings. Ciraco led the Dolphins at the plate with three hits, while Wiese, Reynolds and Stinson each had two hits.
Chris Pabisch earned the win for the Panthers after striking out three batters over five innings, while giving up three runs on seven hits. Dillon McNamara picked up his fifth save of the year after striking out three batters in one and one-third innings pitched. Zito, Houghton and Hutzel each finished the game with three hits as the Panthers ended the game with 16 hits.
Le Moyne (8-12, 2-2 NE-10, 1-1 SW) wraps up its three-game series with the Panthers on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
