THREE-POINT BARRAGE LEADS BENTLEY TO 82-73 WIN OVER MEN'S BASKETBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Jasper Grassa nailed seven three-pointers to lead Bentley University to an 82-73 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) led the Dolphins offensively in the defeat with 24 points, including 13 in the first half, while adding four assists and two offensive rebounds. Junior guard Naté Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) came off the bench to tally 19 points, 11 of which came in the first half, and grab six rebounds, while sophomore guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) registered 14 points (11 after halftime), five assists and four rebounds.

Grassa led five Falcons in double-digit scoring with 24 points, including 12 in each half, while dishing out a game-high six assists. Andrew Shaw posted 14 points, while Tyler McFarland and Alex Furness each netted 11 points. McFarland added a game-best nine rebounds with Furness pulling down six rebounds and dishing out five assists. Keegan Hyland came off the bench to score 10 points and hand out four assists.

Bentley opened the game by hitting its first four shots to jump out to an 11-6 lead at the 17:03 mark. Furness and Grassa hit three-pointers around baskets by Shaw and J.P. Koury and a Grassa free throw, while graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) had four points for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne answered with nine straight points to take its first lead. Gause started the run with back-to-back three-pointers, while Champion capped it with a conventional three-point play with 14:04 left.

After Bentley tied the score at 15 with 13:34 to go on lay-ups by Hyland and Shaw, the Dolphins rattled off a 15-5 run to take their largest lead of the game with 7:13 to play in the first half. Champion led the charge with six points, while Lovell, Gause and junior forward Connor Mahoney">Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) each drilled three-pointers.

Bentley responded with 20 of the next 25 points over a span of six minutes to regain the lead. Grassa bookended the streak with three-pointers, while adding two free throws in between. Shaw had five of the 20 points, while Furness made a three-pointer and Koury and McFarland added two points each.

Champion made a jump shot with 54 seconds left to pull the Dolphins within 40-37 at halftime.

The Falcons opened the second half by making their first six three-point attempts to extend their lead to nine points with 15:11 left. Grassa had the first two and the sixth three-pointer, while Koury, Shaw and Furness each drained one.

After Jate Cheshul put the Falcons up 60-52 with 13:18 left, the Dolphins scored six straight points over the next 2:41 to trim their deficit to two points. Champion made a jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound and followed with two free throws before feeding Gause for a fast-break lay-up with 10:37 left.

Following a Lovell free throw to make the score 62-59 with 9:26 to go, the Falcons scored seven straight points over the next two and one-half minutes for their biggest advantage. Matt Barr started the streak with a conventional three-point play, Hyland followed with a lay-up and then McFarland made a jumper off a feed from Hyland.

After two free throws from McFarland with 4:00 left, the Dolphins tallied an 11-5 run to close within four with 48 seconds left. Gause started the push with a lay-up, Champion nailed a three-pointer from the right wing, Gause made a jump shot and then had a fast-break dunk and Lovell capped the run with a lay-up after picking the pocket of Grassa in the backcourt.

Bentley closed out the game with a lay-up by Shaw and two free throws each from Hyland and Furness in the final 29 seconds.

Le Moyne (7-6, 4-3 NE-10), which had won three straight over the Falcons (by a combined seven points) after dropping 18 of the first 24 all-time meetings, including nine straight (by an average of 12.67 points) before winning in Waltham in 2011, returns to the hardwood on Saturday at Saint Michael's College at 3:30 p.m.
