Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior back
Trevor Creedon (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) headed in the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in the second overtime period to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over 17th-ranked Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
In the opening half, the Warriors registered a 5-4 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to put a shot on goal. Following 31:46 in the second half, during which the Dolphins had a 4-3 edge in shots, freshman midfielder
Adam Resetarits (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) put a shot on goal, but Merrimack goalkeeper Jose Silva made the game's first save.
The Dolphins had their best scoring chance of regulation with just over two minutes left, but Silva turned away a shot by sophomore forward
Liam Roohan (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) and then Resetarits had his rebound attempt blocked by a defender.
After there was only one shot in the first overtime period, the Warriors had their best scoring opportunity 2:33 into the second overtime session, but freshman goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) was able to snag Augusto Silva's shot towards the left goal post.
The Dolphins took advantage of their seventh corner kick of the contest to net the game-winning goal. From the right corner, freshman forward
Jacob Borssen (Stockholm, Södermanland/Solna Gymnasium) served the ball to the top of the goal box. Creedon ran onto the flying ball and headed it into the center of the goal for his fifth career game-winning goal at the 107:20 mark.
Beaury finished the contest with a pair of saves to register his sixth shutout victory of the season, which ties
Matthew Silva '14 for the most by a Dolphin freshman in the program's history. Jose Silva (no relation to Matthew), the Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year each of the past two years, recorded five saves, all in the second half, in the setback. Le Moyne registered a 16-12 advantage in shots, while taking seven of the game's nine corner kicks, including the last six.
Le Moyne (8-3, 5-3 NE-10), which fell to the Warriors, 3-0, last year at Merrimack, continues its three-game homestand on Tuesday against American International College at 3:00 p.m.
