Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior
Nick Rauscher (Henrietta, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) headed in the game-winning goal with 3:08 left in double overtime to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over No. 1 nationally-ranked and previously unbeaten Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Southern New Hampshire, which won the NCAA Division II National Championship last year and has been the top-ranked team in the NSCAA national rankings this year, entered the contest with a 37-game unbeaten streak (35-0-2), the second-longest unbeaten streak in Division II history. The Penmen had also gone unbeaten over their last 32 Northeast-10 regular season and tournament games, which is tied for the third-longest mark in Division II history.
After freshman goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made a save on a header toward the left post by Dominic Samuel off a throw-in, the Dolphins scored off the counterattack. Senior midfielder
Alexander Lautner (Munich, Bavaria/Theodolinden Gymnasium) collected the ball on the left side and sent a pass up the sideline. Junior midfielder
Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) tracked down the ball and on his first touch crossed the ball in front of the ball. Racing in all alone on the right side of the penalty box, Rauscher got his head on the cross and pushed it between the goalkeeper's left leg and the right goal post for his first career goal at the 106:52 mark.
In the first overtime period, the Penmen registered a time-of-possession advantage, but their two shots were high and blocked by a Le Moyne defender.
After each goalkeeper made one save in the first half, the offensive intensity increased in the second half. Southern New Hampshire had the first scoring opportunity of the stanza as Sofiane Tergou blasted a shot from 14 yards out on the right side, but Beaury punched it over the crossbar. Exactly two minutes later, senior midfielder
Zachary MacNabb (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/UNC Pembroke) rifled a shot from the left side, but Dom DiMaggio made a diving save to his right.
Off a short corner kick on the right side, Callum Williams headed the ball towards the left goal post from six yards out, but Beaury recorded the save. With just over 20 minutes remaining in the second half, freshman forward
Jacob Borssen (Stockholm, Södermanland/Solna Gymnasium) fired a shot from just inside the top of the penalty box, which DiMaggio was able to punch over the crossbar.
The final shot on goal came with 12:58 left off the foot of Tergou, but the ball was easily snatched up by Beaury.
Beaury, who becomes just the third Le Moyne goalkeeper to register a shutout against the Penmen (all in the last eight years), finished the contest with five saves to record his conference-leading eighth shutout victory of the season. The eight shutouts are tied for the third-most in the program's history, while his 11 wins are the most by a Le Moyne freshman in the program's history. DiMaggio (Rome, N.Y.), a First Team All-America selection last year, also posted five saves in the contest while suffering his first loss in 415 days. The Penmen registered a 14-9 advantage in shots, while taking eight of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Le Moyne (11-4, 7-4 NE-10), which snapped a three-game losing streak to the Penmen (during which the Dolphins were outscored 9-2), closes out its home schedule on Tuesday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m. Prior to kickoff, the eight members of the team in their final year of eligibility will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
