Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward
Kelly Ristoff (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Siena) scored a pair of goals to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Pace University on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Field.
With the victory, the Dolphins clinch a berth in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships. It is the third berth in the program's 19-year history in the league and the first since 2006.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just over seven minutes into the contest. Senior back
Katherine Duke (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) sent a corner kick from the left corner that slipped through the goalkeeper's hands to Ristoff near the far post, where she knocked the ball into the back of the net with her thigh for her ninth goal of the season.
The Setters, who entered the game two spots ahead of the Dolphins in the standings, but now are one point back, responded with a goal just 100 seconds later. Jillian Ferro, the third-leading scorer in the conference, served a cross from the left endline to Nicole Blair, who pushed a shot into the back of the net from seven yards out for her first marker of the season.
Le Moyne regained the lead just past the 16-minute mark of the half as sophomore midfielder
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) blasted the ball into the top left corner of the goal from 35 yards out in the middle of the field.
Pace had a chance to knot the score at two apiece 2:13 into the second half as the Setters were awarded a penalty kick. However, Ferro sent the kick over the right side of the crossbar.
Less than six minutes later, the Dolphins doubled their lead off a free kick from the right side of the field. Duke sent the kick into the box, where Ristoff got her head on the ball and redirected it into the right side of the netting from seven yards out for her 10th tally of the campaign, the fourth-highest total in the conference. With the goal, Ristoff became the 10th player in the program's history to register double-digit goals in a season.
Junior goalkeeper
Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded one save in the second half to earn her ninth win of the season, which places her in a four-way tie for the second-most wins in a season in the program's history. The mark, which stood as the program record for seven years, was originally set by current head coach
Tracey Leipold '95 in 1993. Lauren DeSousa, who entered the game having allowed just five goals over the first 14 games of the season, suffered the loss after giving up two goals over the first 23:30, without making a save. Le Moyne recorded a 9-5 advantage in shots, while the Setters posted a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (9-7-1, 7-5-1 NE-10), which clinched its first above-.500 record in conference action in the 19 years the Dolphins have been in the league, closes out the regular season on Saturday against Saint Anselm College at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the opening kickoff, the six members of the senior class (
Lindsey Bakal,
Katherine Duke,
Renee Keller,
Emily Spellane,
Mackenzie Irvin and
Jessica Marini) will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
