Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Kirsten Colegrove (Athens, Pa./Athens) scored a pair of goals to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Saint Anselm College on Saturday in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale for both teams at Ted Grant Field.
With the victory, the Dolphins finish in a tie with Franklin Pierce University for fifth place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings and receive the sixth seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The Dolphins will face third-seeded Adelphi University on Tuesday in Garden City, N.Y. in the first round at 4:30 p.m. The NE-10 Championships appearance is the third in the program's 19 years as a league member and the first since 2006, while the sixth seed is their highest in their three appearances.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first just under 17 minutes into the game. After collecting a pass from sophomore midfielder
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) in the middle of the field, Colegrove evaded a defender, carried the ball into space and then lofted a shot from 28 yards out that snuck under the crossbar for her fourth goal of the season.
The duo hooked up again just over 10 minutes into the second half with Terry getting credit for an assist this time. Terry carried the ball over the midfield stripe before playing a through ball between the Saint Anselm defense. Colegrove raced onto the ball and when encountered by the goalkeeper slipped a shot into the right side of the netting from nine yards out.
Saint Anselm cut its deficit in half only five minutes later as Rachel Gillies blasted a shot from 20 yards out inside the near right post off a failed clear attempt by the Dolphins.
Only 105 seconds later, the Hawks had a chance to knot the score at two apiece off a corner kick, but junior midfielder
Marissa Walsh (Chenango Forks, N.Y./Chenango Forks) was able to keep the ball from getting past the left post off a shot by Alexis Elowitch.
Saint Anselm, Elowitch in particular, had two opportunities to score in the final 6:24, but junior goalkeeper
Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was able to make the save on each attempt.
Corsaro finished the game with those two saves to earn her 10th victory of the season. The 10 wins between the pipes are the second-most in a single season by a Dolphin netminder. Cassie Quattropani recorded two saves in the first half in the setback for the Hawks. Saint Anselm registered a 13-8 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 mark in the second half, while taking six of the game's eight corner kicks.
Le Moyne finished the regular season with a 10-7-1 record, including a mark of 8-5-1 NE-10 in conference play. The Dolphins reached the 10-win plateau for just the seventh time in the program's history, while the eight conference wins are their most. Prior to the contest, the Dolphin Athletic Association honored the six members of the senior class (
