Easton, Mass. – Tyler Brondyk scored twice over the final 25 minutes to give Stonehill College a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale for both teams at Skyhawk Field.
With the setback, the Dolphins fall to 12-5 on the season, including a mark of 8-5 in the Northeast-10, and drop to the sixth seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The Dolphins will face third-seeded Adelphi University on Tuesday in Garden City, N.Y. in a first round matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Dolphins and Panthers met in the 4/5 match-up last year with Adelphi registering a 3-0 win on its home turf. The NE-10 Championships appearance will be the 17th in Le Moyne's 19 years in the conference and the 14th straight berth, the second-longest active streak in the league.
The Dolphins struck for the game's first goal just 13 minutes into the contest. After winning a race to a loose ball, graduate student forward
Fabian Egger (Planegg, Bavaria/Feodor-Lynen Gymnasium/Webber International (Fla.)) chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from the left side and into the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
Le Moyne doubled its lead 31:22 into the game as Egger took a cross from fellow countryman
Alexander Lautner (Munich, Bavaria/Theodolinden Gymnasium) and touched it into the goal for his fourth tally in the last two games.
The Dolphins had a chance to extend their lead to 3-0 10:30 into the second half, but Stonehill goalkeeper Luke Besse was able to dive to his right and stop a penalty kick by senior back
Trevor Creedon (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton).
Just 4:13 later, the Skyhawks cut their deficit in half as Cam McDonough took a pass from Drew Montano and tallied his first goal of the season by slipping a shot from outside of the box into the lower left corner of the net.
Off a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick by McDonough, Brondyk found the ball in front of his feet and knocked it into the open net from inside the goal box at the 65:58 mark.
After Montano put a header wide 55 seconds earlier, the Skyhawks netted the game-winning goal with 11:39 remaining in regulation. Matthew Gallo sent a long through ball that freed Brondyk for a breakaway, which he converted for his fifth goal of the season.
Le Moyne, which lost for the first time this season when scoring at least two goals (7-1), had three scoring opportunities over the final 5:11, but only put one of those attempts on target, which was saved by Besse.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered five saves in the setback, including three in the first half, while allowing more than two goals for the first time this season. Besse finished the contest with four saves, all of which came in the second half. Stonehill recorded a 16-12 advantage in shots, while Le Moyne posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
