BASEBALL FALLS TO YOUNG HARRIS COLLEGE, 8-2, IN SEASON OPENER

Box Score

Young Harris, Ga. – Cody Beck allowed just two unearned runs over six innings to lead Young Harris College to an 8-2 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Zell B. Miller Field.

Young Harris, which is in its third year of a three-year transition process to become an NCAA Division II member institution, has had four players appear in the major leagues over the last eight seasons (all of which played for the Mountain Lions as a Junior College program), highlighted by Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis.

The Mountain Lions opened the game's scoring with all the runs they would need in the first inning. After center fielder Josh Rudnik and designated hitter Jack Morrow drew five-pitch walks around a strikeout, left fielder David Atwood doubled to right field to drive in Rudnik and Morrow. Following another strikeout, second baseman Tom Valichka singled to left field to plate Atwood.

Le Moyne cut its deficit to one run by scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning on one hit and a Young Harris error. After sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to center with one out, sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on a three-base error by the pitcher, which allowed Swetman to come all the way around to score. Sophomore designated hitter Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Wright.

Young Harris (4-3) got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Following a one-out single and stolen base by right fielder Trey Rogers, catcher Spencer Thomas doubled to left center to knock in Rogers.

The Mountain Lions added single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Valichka doubled to left center with one out and came around to score as Thomas reached on an error by the third baseman with two outs. In the seventh inning, Rudnik led off with a double to center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Morrow.

Young Harris finished off the game's scoring with two runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the eighth inning. After first baseman Brett Westmoreland led off with a single to left field, Rogers doubled to left with one out to plate Westmoreland, while taking third on a throwing error by the left fielder. Rogers then raced home on a passed ball.

Junior southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after yielding five runs (four earned) on six hits over six innings on the mound, while striking out seven batters. Beck registered three strikeouts, while allowing just four hits and one walk, to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Le Moyne (0-1) and Young Harris resume their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
