BASEBALL FALLS TO No. 23 MILLERSVILLE AND TIFFIN ON FIRST DAY OF RIVERSIDE SPRING CLASSIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Williamston, N.C. – Chris Murphy tossed seven scoreless innings to lead 23rd-ranked Millersville University to a 6-0 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Riverside Spring Classic at Skewarkee Park. Later Saturday afternoon, the Dolphins fell to Tiffin University, 7-4.

Millersville scored the only run it would need on one hit in the first inning. After Zach Stone drew a two-out walk, Dan Johnson doubled down the right field line to drive in Stone.

Following five scoreless innings, the Marauders tallied four runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the top of the seventh inning. Tyler Orris led off with a single to center field and then stole second base on a strikeout. After a single to third base by Chas McCormick and a foul out, Stone was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Johnson then doubled to right center to drive in Orris and McCormick. Dan Stoltzfus followed by reaching on a throwing error by the first baseman, which allowed Stone and Johnson to score.

Millersville added an insurance run on two hits in the eighth inning. Orris doubled down the left field line with one out and scored from third on a two-out single to the shortstop by McCormick.

After the Marauders failed to score with the bases loaded without any outs in the top of the ninth, the Dolphins had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame, but could not push across a run. Sophomore catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) reached on a fielding error by the left fielder with one out to start the rally attempt. Senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) then drew consecutive walks to load the bases. However, Steve Ghiardi got a fly out and struck out the last batter to end the game.

Junior Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) suffered the loss after yielding one run on two hits over six innings on the mound, while striking out a pair of batters. Murphy, who joined Davis on the Tino Martinez Award watch list earlier this week, struck out eight batters, while allowing just two hits to pick up the win.

Due to the game being played at a neutral location, statistics are not currently available for the game between Le Moyne and Tiffin.

Le Moyne (2-4) closes out play at the Riverside Spring Classic on Sunday against Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 10:00 a.m.
